The Great Brett Kenny

Hey fellow Eels tragics, my family and I just back from a cruise to Vanuatu and the greatest five eigth in the history of the game was on board with his family. He is a lot more powerfully built than he was in his playing days, and I don't mean he has let himself go and blown up like the Michelin man, he is just heaps bigger! He was an absolute gentlemen on the cruise although he had to put up with some pissed idiots trying to get the signature (they did'nt have the courage to ask when they were sober!). As a bit of trivia, they were auctioning a heap of memorbilia and the Parramatta legends signed and framed guernsey went for $2200, not bad.Bert had nothing to do with the auctions, just a coincidence.

  • The Crow has been quoted more than once pointing out the stats in State of Origin for Kenny v Lewis

7 - 4 to Bert head to head I think when both playing 5/8

    One of the best
  • Unfortunately, I never had the chance to see Brett Kenny in the flesh during his playing days as I wasn't born when he was one of the game's premier five-eighth/centres.
Times like these make me wish someone invented a time machine, so I could go back in time and do just that, watch Kenny play.
  • He did!
I always thought when it came to the head to head against Wally as 5/8's, Wally didn't win any?
  • Brett kenny easily beat Wally Lewis every time they met , Kenny as i keep saying not only killed england or any team he played against , but was NSW Legend , won 4 pemiershps with the best team in history (eels ) , scored 2 tries in every GRAND FINAL (86 ---------2 dis allowed i know i know but we still won the gameby 2 points ) .He killed them in the semis every time , won Australian and Country game matches . Yes kenny was the best , And not even Hayne can come close for the next 10 years . Thats the facts !!!!
  • Brett Kenny, is, was, and always will be my sporting idol. I was lucky enough to watch him play his ENTIRE career - and PLAY he did - Kenny played a type of game that was so UNIQUE that ONLY he could play that way - he was original, had tonnes of guile and deception in his bag of tricks and would often mesmorise opposing defenses with his individual brillance. The closest player TODAY that plays a similar brand of football is Benji Marshall - Marshall also has the responsibilitise of a kicking game, unlike Kenny but Marshall's and Kenny's attacking game throuigh running and passing are very similar

Kenny was a BIG OCCASSION player - the bigger the stage - the easier it seemed for Kenny to make decisive plays that could win a match

It is NO co-incidence that BOTH Brett Kenny and Wally Lews adorne the State of Origin shield. BOTH were without peer in the 80's and without Kenny to occupy Lewis -NO SINGLE PLAYER during the Wally Lewis era, except pehaps Peter Sterling's tactical play could match wits with Lewis

But does that make Kenny BETTER than Lewis ?

    No

Both these champions were BRILLIANT and BIG GAMES with BIG OCCASIONS brought out the BEST in both players - and in my heart of hearts - I cannot single out EITHER player as BETTER than the other. Lewis was an outstanding LEADER of men capable of lifting his team from defeat into victory through his captaincy and never say die attitude - NEVER EVER underestimate the value of leadership on the field, Lewis had a BRILLIANT football brain and could set the tone of victory through is amazing kicking and passing games - but he could also turn a game with his SHEER will to win by either taking on the defense with UP TEMPO charges into opposing defenses and equallly DOMINATE a game with his ferocious head on tackling

Brett Kenny and Steve Mortimer are the PUREST tacklers that I have ever seen - Kenny gets little recogniion for his IRON defense and copybook technique - this, more than anything interfered with Lewis at State of Origin level - and then there is of course the Kenny brilliance in attack - he could beat ANYONE with a swerve, change of pace, sidestep, dummy and slight of hand with his passes

I was LUCKY to see BOTH these LEGENDARY superstars, in their prime and you really can't split them - their playing styles were so different, that a comparison is unfair due to their DIFFRENT playing styles, so it really isn't neccessary to compare - BOTH players were supremely gifted & only seldom come along. YET Rugby League was blessed to have BOTH playing at the same time..............and to quote an old 80's theme song........THEY were SIMPLY THE BEST
  • Brett Kenny was 'A NATURAL' and whenever he had the ball in his hands i didn't even want to blink and i would hold my breath.....Freakish.

I was fortunate enough to sit in the eels dressing room after a trial in 91 and he was only a metre away and as captain he made an emotional speech that sent shivers up my spine and made my hairs stand up (norths had just flogged parra 54-8)

I was also very fortunate to watch him play his final game and get his signature at the leagues club after the game (AWESOMENESS!!!)

I can vouch for B.KENNY being an absolute gentleman as every time I seen him in public he would always be polite and listen to every word that supporters said to him with a genuine smile and ears pricked...A LEGEND OF A PLAYER & A LEGEND OFF THE FIELD
  • And i thought i was the only 1 that honestly believed this.
    • Lewis hated playing against Kenny. Bert ran rings around him. Greatest player ever, IMO, to ever play for the eels.
      • Just a shame he wasn't as influential in Origin as Wally otherwise it would be a different story for Kenny
  • Kenny/Bert was one reason I fell in love with the eels as a younger lad in the early 80's.

Anyone remember their skillful style of play Bert with the great Sterling, Crow, Guru Snr, zip zip man, Mr Pepepetual Motion, etc. What a team, what an era !

The only thing i recall Bert not mastering was a kicking game.
