The curious case of bevan french

Can anyone explain what has happened to bevan. When he came on the scene he was a small thing but he was a great hustler and was not bad in defence either. He opening 13 game he had 19 triesNow he doesnt seem as much as an x-factor as he was. He has now 30 tries in 30 odd games meaning his try scoring effort have significantly slowed. He seems far too comfortable in FG and doesnt put the hard yards in like George jennings doesDoes he need a stint in reserve grade??

  • He’s still a great attacking threat. He’s not a player who is going to do your tough carry out of your own 20 but he’s a very dangerous player when given any kind of space. People taking about getting rid of him are being short sighted and will regret it if he goes.
    • Agree
  • Hes very much a player who comes into the game when things are going well not a ruck it out do the dirty work player players like him shine when things are going well if the attack isn't working they struggle
  • Ive said for a while i cant find a spot for him in a quality team if i was coach.

Im not impressed by his summersault theatrics either to finish off basic wingers trys either although that seems to win a few simpler fans over who dont look much deeper..

He cant take the pressure off the pack with big runs to help them out like a traditional winger, he gets out bustled, hes got no power game.

Yes he can score some freakish tries but thats not enough for me, id like to see us go the direction of big outside backs, they have a positive knock on effect on the team, where as Bev has to be carried to an extent.

  • Lost his PCL and lost his confidence with it.

  • Bevan is just too light. He needs about 10kg but I don't see that happening with his skinny legs.

    • French seems stronger this year than last, but our predictable attack sees him left with no room and defences are all over him.  I think it more a confidence thing with him.

Is Billy slater to small, I also wouldn't think kalyn ponga weigh much more then him either but Newcastle give him space and plays to suit just as storm do for slater.  I would like see him get ball 1 or 2 off ruck with centre and winger outside him.  Using his speed to get on outside create the overlap and force the defence to either stay on their man where he can run through himself, or if they come in to him cutout pass to winger as ponga does so well.

Thing is all our players look bad at the moment so their weakness are exposed more as people look for answers.  Bevan is a keeper in my books but means we need big centres to help do hard yards out of own half and better understanding from gutho to support him when kick goes his way.

      • Please, comparing him to slater and Ponga is a joke, he doesnt have half the game as those two even at the same age.

      • I haven't checked but I'd guess Ponga has got at least 10kgs on Bevan... maybe more. He is taller and seems a heap stronger and way more solid. Can anyone see Ponga being grabbed 10m in from the sideline and thrown out over it? No.

I don't think the combination we have currently of a smaller forward pack + a featherweight winger who cannot take a hitup is a good mix either. Bevan could possibly be carried a little in that sense if we had the pack... but we don't. With our pack we need Cotric / Mansour / Semi type wingers.

  • Why not compare them when talking about size or speed? It's a pretty apt comparison.
