The Chairman’s Box

Thanks to Stephen Speed (publican of The Fortune of War Hotel) for inviting my old man his mate n me along to yesterday’s game in the box.I know we were his guests but gee I can only say how friendly & accomodating Max Donnelly & Burnie Gurr were, they both sat with us through out the game and I fired a heap of questions at them both and they obligingly answered them honestly. When Burnie talked to dad (80) and found out he’s followed them since 47 he then introduced him to ex & current players as a foundation supporter, nice touch Burnie! What worried was when speaking to Max Donnelly he did say that when his times up and that’s not too far away Parra are then susceptible to the old factions gaining power again. As Max said we need to be run by business astute people. Anyway was a great win and a great day, just wanted to put it out there how good these blokes were to us yesterday.Go Parra

  • Sounds good BB Eel; your points about astute people is paramount - rather then factions etc. people should take note of this . Are you in Bat Bay?

can you enlighten us on anything ?

    • Yeah mate I’m in Bateau Bay, Corey Norman’s form was brought up and not by me. Dally M front runner a couple of years ago to someone who won’t run through the line, Max also spoke about how bad the atmosphere is at ANZ and how good the new stadium will be for many reasons, from Max’s point of view it’s really important when he’s gone that we don’t head down the old road again
      • Interesting day then mate; some good observations and i imagine a superb afternoon had in good company. Norman does need to take some ownership more often imo too; something BA has said about both halves.

You must be nearby to me then; live in same town. Not far as crow flies from the Pub.

      • Not far from you - I’m at Horsfield Bay.

    • I'm at Killarney Vale
  • Bateau Bay Eel I really hope that Max's fears are not realised. I looked at the Bulldogs elections this year and consoled myself by saying that this used to be the Eels, not any more.

I understood that they had the ability to force the changes thru irrespective of the vote. I was disappointed with how they arranged the vote. Was never going to get up.

    • Couldn’t agree more John; remember the Fitz factions; Spags and Sharpe? It was a farce and I dare say while they may have had good intentions, some of these guys stuffed up the club for yrs....its why we need astute business people and some with some sports knowledge too.

    • Excellent call John, was a football club member for many many years and was glad of it until I spat the dummy when the mafia man got in, and I did not renew, had I kept the membership I would have had around 45 years membership had the set up still been in place.

BBE, thanks for this great blog, my wife and I lived at Wadalba from 2010 until last September when we moved to Raworth, and the CC is a top area to live, enjoying the more peaceful area here, but makes it a long trip down to ANZ, but will get there after the nerves in my back are burnt come end of May.

For all the angst and flack tossed at Max and Bernie plus the coach there's no doubt in my mind they have been great assets to the club, both the PLC and football club, would have great to hear the conversations and what they had to say to you and your dad.

My late dad who never saw the eels win was one of the foundation members of the club, interestingly I was thinking of him today, miss him heaps.  Enjoy the time with your dad mate, its precious every second of the time you can spend together and support the eels as well.
