The Cave, Moderation and other issues

UPDATE (10:00PM): I didn't realise that leaving the group unrestricted membership meant that it fed onto the home page so I've had to delete it and restart it. All members to the cave will now need to be approved, which is probably how it should have been anway. Please also note my comment below about still adhering to the code of conduct.

As you all know, 1Eyed Eel has expanded dramatically over the last year and keeps doing so. At various stages, we have had to tweak the site to cater for that growth and the growing diversity of members. I think we've been very successful at doing that with initiatives like Trash Blogs and so forth.

I've been running a conference interstate over the past four days, so I've only just caught onto some of the events that have been unfolding in regards to moderation and so forth. Clearly there are a few divergent feelings, and in situations like this there is always some truth on both sides.

However, know this. I appointed the moderators because they proved themselves over a long period of time to be trusted and valuable members of this community. I won't tolerate them personally attacked and indeed, as we state very clearly in the code of conduct, no personal attacks will be tolerated on the site.

The moderators are working to clear guidelines set my ME. If you have a problem with the moderation then send me a private message and outline very clearly what your grievance is and what you thought was unfairly treated.

You may not agree with every decision our moderators make, but the same as Rugby League players need to accept the call of the referee, you need to accept that if a moderator has felt you crossed the line then that's the decision. I'm sure the ramifications of having one comment deleted from a Rugby League website is fairly inconsequential event in one's life. Get over and move on but first go and have a read of the code of conduct and maybe try and consider why it was deleted, so it won't happen again.

I'm saddened that a couple of our mods have been singled out, especially given that nobody which mods make moderation decision. And as a moderator myself, if you attack the moderating group you're also attacking myself. I, and all of the moderators on this site, put a huge amount of time into keeping the site as welcoming and accessible to all Parramatta fans, and that requires rules that people need to adhere to. We don't want to take the colour away from the site, but I don't want to be paranoid or for the site to be a place where I don't want my son to be able to visit.

However, we have the capability to create break-out groups and I've now done this to address some of the grievances some people have had, with a new group called 'The Cave'. It is for Over 18's only. It will still be subject to the same Code of Conduct as the rest of the site but we'll have a more liberal interpretation of that code. So no doubt there will be a bit more argy bargy than normal and anyone joining the group should respect that. I'm going to ask Fuifui as the original instigator of the group, and also a long-time member who I respect to administer the group.

This is a trial and understand that if it degrades too far or is misused, I won't have any hesitation in shutting it down. I also see the group as a useful mechanism for us to move any content that is marginal away from the main blogs area, so I think that will benefit all of our members who aren't at all interested in that content.

By the way, one of the problems with the groups and the site in general was that because it doesn't go through the main activity stream it was harder to keep up with new posts. However, there is a new option in the email settings called Daily Email Digest. If you tick that, you can then get alerts to all the areas of the site your interested in, but the mail only comes once a day. Go into Settings and Email to set that up.

I think its a good thing we've had this sorted before the start of the season, as I have no doubt we'll keep seeing more people join 1Eyed Eel. The Panthers trial saw the site serve up more than 45,000 pages that day, nearly a third higher than any other day. So everyone please play nice, as I don't want to have to take any more drastic action than this to keep the site as something that I, and the Parramatta community are proud of.

Thanks,

Phil

Hopefully we can all put this behind us now and go back to supporting our mighty eels.

  • I thought the cave was going to be a chatroom?
  • Well played, but can i say as an avid doggies supporter, who comes on to stir from time to time, (all in good fun, i might add) even i was embarrased by some of the content in the past 24 hrs, i think everyone is both nervous and excited about the upcoming footy season, in particular you eels fans, who are not sure of what to make of your new roster, you want the ball rolling so you can asses your team for yourself, its a new chapter for the eels club... The off season has been a long one, everyone just wants the footy back on allready.....and that way the content on here will invariably relate more to league, and less fluff which tends to bring silly arguments.

Good Luck, as a strong and competitive Parra outfit will only enhance the competition.....But the Doggies are certainties for the 2011 premiership. :)

  • Touche Phil, good work.

I've missed most of what was going on and only got glimpses of it, but there certainly seemed to be some major crossing of the line.  Some of what was said is ok in a mate to mate at a pub type of thing but that is it.  I'm sure some of the comments would have been treated a lot more harshly face to face with somebody not known to the assailants....  There also seemed to be a bit of online stalking or online vendettas.

Can we start to play a bit nicer now?  No more attacks or twisting around what you typed to justify it to yourself?

  •  Well done
  • Mr One eyed

When you refered to the moderators being referees is a good likeness ,but also to when a referee is making bad calls one after the other isnt it time for them to retire or step down?

I hope you didnt see my blog as a attack on one of the moderators but more of a place i could disscuss what was going on at the time between me an the site an me an the moderators because i was banned from the chat room...

i also to thought " THE CAVE" could be a chat room?  an a different blog section sooo we didnt offended anyone fullstop ...

    Sincerly yours

    Mr Underpants

  • Over 18's sort of ruins your party doesn't it Ronnie?
  • FINNO

Do you remeber saying this '

"Awesome...Number 1...Amazingly i come to this website to see stuff about the Eels not carry on like a child"

But your constently dropping comments like you  have above  trying to get a reaction out of people ....looks like you r saying one thing  but  doing  another constently....Dont ruin another blog with your childish comments..

    • remeber? What's that? I'm sorry i only took English at school
      • Now so I don't come across as biased, Ronnie and Finno....no no no!  This isn't the blog for it.
