The 9s title

I was thinking it doesn't seem right that the 9s comp was taken off us as its a preseason comp where people like menzies fittler anasta etc have played in when they are not registered players. We could of trialed players and cut them from the team, i know its a meaningless comp but it just seems petty to strip us of that as well.

  • Well its a waste of all our times that watched it being stripped of 9's trophy is a load of garbage should still be ours.
    • I agree I have been thinking the same thing all along
  • Spot on, it makes no sense given its just a fun carnival where it doesn't matter about playing only registered players. In the scheme of things, it's a minor issue. Still it highlights the illogic of the total decision.
  • I made a similar point in an earlier blog; when a years retired Matt King scores the winning try in golden point in souths vs sharks last year, how can the NRL say the teams must comply with the cap?

  • It is just an extension of the utter mismanagement of the entire process by the NRL.
If the Eels management and legal team handle this even semi professionally we will walk away with more chocolates than they tried to take from us. The fact that the club did wrong will become irrelevant.
  • I see it differently. There is a clear logic. Take the 9s title off U.S. and the NRL can claim consistency. Forget the disanalogies with regard to unregistered players. All that matters is the symbolic value of title removal and the claim of consistency. The NRL knows it would have been playing a losing game to sell to other teams' fans that the title should remain. Remember, with Storm cheating we all said "they deserve everything they get". The 9s title was like low-hanging fruit.
  • who care we got the money for winning that

  • It's just so the NRL can appear consistent. That's all.
I don't think anyone would argue that the eels didn't win the 9's fair and square. Every team used a lot of 2nd tier and fringe players. Salary cap is irrelevant.
Fine take it off us but ask anyone, the Eels won the 2016 9's.
    • You're right. The NRL have equated us with the Storm & Dogs scandal, so that had to be ' seen ' to strip something (their fairness mantra) . What else could they strip from us ? I think some rabid opposition fans & the media, though, will delight in reminding us we didn't really win it, because we're cheats (which says more about them). It's pretty ridiculous.
    • Thinking about this whole thing, I think our current (unsubstantiated) punishment is actually quite a good outcome for us considering the storm and Bulldogs punishments.
The storm were over the cap in 2010, and in round 8 were stripped of all points and allowed to play for none for the rest of the year. That year was over. However, they'd already won 2 premierships by then. The fans had already celebrated. Ask the players whether they won the comp that year and every single one of them would say yes. None would say no. Same with the fans. The eels won the 9s this year and it's the first really good feeling I've ever had being an eels fan. Even though they've officially taken it off us, they can't take that feeling away from me. Ask Cameron King who won the 9s this year.

The Bulldogs on the other hand were stripped of 37 points in round 25. That's it. They were up there. It was on track to be a premiership year. Nothing to cheer about the last few seasons. I think being a fan of the dogs in 02 would've been the worst feeling in the world.

"If you are going to do that better off just keeping him in Cup as a break glass option. Unless he is that much of a cancer and that negative to the squad that he needs to go."
