Takairangi's future

Takairangi is clearly not quick enough in defence or attack as a centre and I would say (with Semi gone) now even more of a liability in attack. For the team to further advance we surely need to free up that centre spot for either a marquee signing, if not permanently slate the position for Gutherson.Which leaves where to best retain Takairangi. I think about the evolution of Jarrod McCracken and Luke Ricketson and a few other now successful backrowers who started their careers as outside backs. If Takairangi - with obvious height and a good frame on him - were to bulk up in the offseason, could he be a good edge backrower? He clearly has the pedigree to pass and run angles, but his lack of speed is a worry out wide when exposed.Worth a punt?(Pls don't bash me over the head for throwing up an idea!)

  • I agree with you. He should be a utility off the bench. Id go hard for the Morris brothers. Imagine this backline... 1. Gutho, 2. B. Morris, 3. Jenko, 4. J. Morris, 5. French, 6. Norman, 7. Moses. That's a backline
    • Good call, he prob couldn't play big minutes as a forward yet
    • Morris brothers are old but you may be right great experience for our young guys
    • He is a liability
    • Your right Adam76. They're not what they were, but if we could get them relatively cheap for a season I'd go for it. I think they'd have still plenty to offer. Them plus another prop would satisfy our recruitment imo.
    • A change of clubs is what they need.Bring over fataler mariner to
  • I reckon Taks is destined for the forwards, possibly from the bench.

I really like him as a player - always gives 100% - and is obviously a very popular figure in the team.

He will still be able to pay centre, five eighth, even fullback at a pinch so he would be a very handy bloke to have coming off the bench as a forward/utility.

  • I wouldn't say he isn't quick enough, I'd say he doesn't have the acceleration required. If he's given early ball before the line he can be a handful but I'll leave it to BA and will be happy either way
  • It is but he doesn't bet have the gas to go with the quicker outside backs
  • Was interesting that taka and semi switched in defence a number of times during games against Brisbane when James Roberts was playing and some other games I can't remember to combat the speed difference.
A quick winger can make up for taka lack of speed with good communication.
That said I think taka perfect for bench as he can fill in the backline if someone goes down or play as wide running second rower or even makeshift 5/8 as done in past.
