Super League 2.0

Reports are emerging that there may very well be a "Super League" 2.0 war about to go down.Self run NRL clubs are fed up with the NRL and the way the league is being run and are possibly looking at making their own completion. The new TV deal has added fuel to the fire with clubs not happy with the deal and the way the negotiations were handled. The fact that the AFL signed off on a much bigger, more professional, TV deal just days later has had clubs scratching their heads.I for one am well and truly over the circus that is the NRL. The league is run by clueless businessman, and the fans are fed up. Rule changes, consistently poor officiating and cost are the main reasons for fans losing interest. It's has gotten to the point where I am embarrassed to call myself an NRL fan.I have NEVER been a fan of Dave Smith. He has clearly ruined the game since his appointment 3 years ago. The sooner he leaves the better. If the game does not change for the better any time soon, I personally would 100% support a new completion. What's everyone's thoughts on this topic? Would you support a Super League style completion? Would you be happy to see Parra break away from the NRL?

  • I agree with your sentiment ParraLAD and feel the game is generally being run very poorly both on and off the field.

I can't see another War happening though - it would spell the end for many clubs - probably including ours.

The last War was really simply all about Pay TV rights at the time and the fact that there were 2 Pay TV providers (Fox and OptusVision) vying for the same product.

Everything being said at the moment is really just bluster - as Al Hunt said elsewhere, Fox NEEDS league to stay relevant/viable, regardless of what Murdoch says publicly - it will all work itself out relatively quickly.

By the way, the deal with chanel 9, if analysed properly, is actually very good imo.

  • The combined efforts of Smith, Grant and Greenberg have seen the AFL become the number one sport. Says a lot for them.

    • So the AFL has only become the number sport since Smith got the gig lol???  Sadly since the SL war the AFL has been the number sport in the country.   News ripped the game apart just so Rupes could have RL on his shiny new pay TV network.  Then for the next 15 years we took unders on TV rights just so the old prick could recoup the money he lost.  It was only because of Gallop getting the arse we finally got a decent TV deal that was parable with the AFL's.  Sure Smith has made mistakes(hiring Greenturd the biggest) but at least we have a guy in charge trying to get RL a tv deal it deserves unlike Gallop who was happy to sign the first deal waved in his face.  All this negative press the last week has come about because Smith stood up to News and didn't take their first and underwhelming offer.

They will continue to stir up trouble with BS articles like this while ever they don't have RL at the right price on Fox.

    • It's more then just the TV deal though. Surely you can't sit there and say that Dave Smith has done a good job since his arrival. The game has gone backwards since his appointment. It's not a coincidence either.
  • I hope it happens, i also hope it would be a competition which completely ignores these ridiculous rule changes put in during the last 5 years and just plays the game the old way even allowing for rarerities like pushing in scrums.
  • Yes we need the super league v2

Way too many teams in Sydney
Should be 14-16 true national comp

    4 Queensland teams
    3 NSW regional teams
Newcastle , Central Coast , Wollongong
    2 metro Sydney teams
    1 ACT team
    1 Victorian team
    1 Adelaide team
    1 Perth team
    1 New Zealand team

A 2nd division comp consisting of
    12 NSW metro teams
( jets, roosters, magpies, bears, rabbits, Tigers, sharks, eels, dragons, Bulldogs, panthers, sea eagles) this will match the current qld cup comp.
    • Another clueless non-Sydney person telling us how to run our competition. Funny how the Sydney comp survived as the best comp in Aus for 80 years before the non-Sydney clubs invaded & destroyed it.

If Qld is such a successful rugby league stronghold then why didn't they just stay in Qld & build up their own comp instead of invading ours???

The best way forward for RL is to kick out every non-Sydney club & go back to what was working so successfully prior to 1988... 3 grades every week, every club playing each other twice home & away in a structured logical sequence (not when clubs pick & choose to play), & every fan being able to attend every match every week without having to be rich enough to pay airfares.

  • Bring it...we are due ..FU&k the NRL...they are ruining our game
  • I have a few grand, can i invest in it lol? I wish.
  • I'm not sure that all clubs are disappointed in the TV deal as reported. There is an agenda in those reports.
