SS = Sad Sunday

The eels seriously need Fergs back, as todays game was sad - Sad to see a young rookie in his 2nd NRL game, Score a try, on the right side of the field, and make some fair reads.  Sader still was to see a rat jack centre show he can run and defend.  As Lippy the Lion and Hardy Ha Ha would say,  O! Me O! my.

  • Yer Waqa played well inside sivo he needs to stay there  and dunster looks good he at least has better movement than fergo and is a big body  i know the knights were well down on troop's to but a good win and a confidence booster  Brown was a big help in defence to and his attack was good today best game this year I think for Brown

  • Don't worry mate.

Dunster will be back on the wing in reggies soon enough and Waqa will be back to his turnstile best before long.

    • Fella's, rather than Sad Sunday, I was being more in line with it being Sarcastic Sunday, for obvious reasons, and we all need to have a decent amount of joy with todays game.

Watching the game with eels running out on to the paddock most chose not to go through the NCLE odd pharts double lines, I have to admit at the beginning I was nervous as the old mens brigade were really shoving the Grand final win against the eels 20 years ago, and was sort of thinking of an ambush by them. Thankfully it actually was the opposite, and generally the ref was good, and the eels played what I consider to be safe but entertaining football, dissapointed though in the nights getting that late try though.

While I think there was a degree of clunkiness in the play, the eels went well, I was a bit surprised though that Opi & Waqa were playing on the opposite sides to normal, perhaps Opi was there as something of a cover for Dunster, and the two of them did work well together.  Dunster's first NRL try would have lifted his confidence and for me did nothing wrong really to mean he would be dropped anytime soon, a couple of missed tackles did not harm him

As for Waqa, not being in Fergs shadow,  I think lifted him and his plays, he was fine in defense and pretty fair in attack as well.

For me, if the two of them continue in the same vain and no big drop off's in their games, I cannot see Fergs getting his spot back.  The Fox sport commentators mentioned that Fergs had played in Reggies today also. Maybe his future is showing.

        • Brissy, agree, some reports have it that we were playing against a weakened team today, while there may be some truth in it, the way the team played as far as I am concerned, it was a game we really had to win. the couple of changes, and DB's return got most of our primary players back together, given the two back changes they pretty much fitted in well. Dunster had 2 tackle misses, for a rookie that's not bad really.

Having the primary 3 players in the halves back together was a real lift for the team overall.

          • I'm not sure if you are taking the piss or not with your comment about us playing against a weakened team today Col.   Try Mitchell Pearce, Kalyn Ponga, David Klemmer ......that's about $2m per season for those 3 and then add another $2m for the others that were out.

Having to win the game was never the issue, the subjectivity of the playing personnel is a problem that BA needs to get right.

Now I know I am harsh on Dunster and you would rightfully judge me as unfair. His selection in this game is ok by me as it gives him a little more experience in the FG squad. The sacking of Ferguson is/was also expected and BA offered him the rest...... he subsequently refused that and played Reserve Grade because he acknowledged he had some work to do. Good sign!

Now Ferguson is probably on his last legs and it is very apparent that his turnaround ability is poor. I have a view that Ferguson is "maybe" a self imposed victim of social drug taking, a problem much more prevalent than many would admit. Putting this all aside I still don't think Dunster is the answer to our wing deficiencies.

I believe attack through the wings is imperative for all modern day RL teams and when you look at the wingers out there, I just don't see Haze being any long term answer or his development likely.

One of the obvious reasons is we do not have centres that do much to help our wingers, our left side wing attack is principally off the back of Gutho or one of the halves, Sivo is now doing a fine job of this with his unique ability to steamroll anything between the 10metre line and the try line. BUT he is rarely set up by a centre, even Menning's was not renowned for setting up his winger.

If Dunster is to develop we need to get some centres that are capable of some ball play......this then leaves us with a need for a destructive type of winger on that side as well, as Dunster  will struggle with that individuality...... maybe that may explain my position with not being a Dunster fan or believing he can give us any sort of a fix in our current squad.

We badly need a Josh Morris type of centre to bring through more young centres and wingers through our club. There is talk that the Roosters may have to let a winger go for next year, if we picked up Tupou or Verrill's it would be a lead in the right direction. I also like that Fijian winger from St George (available?) and Vanavalu if his Union mission fails.

Colin I believe these are the wingers we need, unless of course Dunster has a massive hit of steroids and weight training that can transform him......then I can be a fan.

            • Yes I believe we were playing against a weakened side on Sunday, as how many of their primary team were out? Klemmer, Frizel , Ponga & if reports are right there were 5 others out, with a couple of them long term. So what's the issue and why take the road you have in what I said as its factual and by your own admission.

I won't comment on your next line as it says nothing outside of some form of a lecture.

As for Dunster, seems you have a real set on him, and probably on other young inexperienced players, given his lack of NRL experience, and the aspect that he failed by missing 2 tackles in the game, scored a try, and had his run metres were not too bad.  What gives with the aspect that other clubs bring in young players to see how they go, but if I have one real gripe with our coach is that there is something of a reluctance at times to bring young players in, especially in certain positions.

So we need a Josh Morris type of centre, who would you reccoment for that? maybe you need to be on the selection commitee or something.

As for the weigh training, put him on Steroids? wow so you want to introduce some forms of drugs into a player, great call Pops.  He weighs 90Kg and I feel pretty sure other eels players are around the same weight, Will Smith, Dylan, Moses, Reed, all under his weight.
