Sportingnews.com round 1 starting lineup

Sporting news has predicted the team lineups for all teams. The Eels as below...

Personally I think this is right on the money.  Good bench options, and a really solid top four team.

Not really spoiling for an argument here, just think it's got great balance, youth, experience and energy.

i hope we can break the drought soon.

  • I think you will probably find Brock Lamb gets elevated into the top 30 and gets a bench spot in front of Taka.

Looks like  good team though with good back up

      • Why the hate for Evans Poppa? He gave us so much impact as a starter and off the bench last year. He was also huge in defence.  And also why so much love for Stone? I havent seen anything from him that makes me remotely interested

            • I think we need a good mix of players and Evans fits that mould. We have big tall players, we have metre eaters and offloaders and with Evans and Brown we have agressive players that can force a mistake. Starting or on the bench, i think he is good for the team.

I think we would have a great balance in our team with Evans/RCG, Kaufusi,Nuikore and a utility to rest Mahoney. Isaac Luke would have been perfect.

  • Swap Evans with RCG and that's probably right (Blake might not play round 1)

  • Wow, all of a sudden we have ridiculous depth in our pack.  Evans, Paulo, Mahoney, Lane, Matterson, Brown, Alvaro, RCG, Kaufusi, Nuikore, Stone.

  • Spot on for the best lineup of players.

    Would swap Evans and RCG.

I don't think Waqa will be back until Rd 3 at the earliest

    • What has Evans done wrong to lose his starting spot and what has RCG done right to get it? To my way of thinking RCG has to earn it and he hasn't done anything of late to warrant that.

        • So you would prefer to reward someone based on reputation, on a single performance throughout an entire season where otherwise he did fuck all and who only puts in after they get what they want? Wow.

If RCG outperforms Evans in actual games, not in training or pre season trials, sure he gets the starting spot. Until then it is Kane's to lose. That's how you create healthy competition for spots and a better team environment. Not giving it to some newby who hasn't done shit for Parramatta and hasn't proven that they deserve it.

          • Adam, if we go back to when Evans was signed, he was not missed at the chooks and was very inconsistent overall, when good, he was good, but more often than not was average at best.  BA took a punt on him owing to size and with the hope he would bolster the pack, which did not help us one bit especially in 2018, then again he was pretty much as good and bad as the rest of the team then..

Season 2019 showed more of what he could do,more so in the second half of the year, he played 5 games in the first half off the bench, before being dropped to Wenty, until round 12 where he started to show his worth. For me I see a player who could be anything but rarelly does it, although he did show more in the end of this years season.

RCG I would suggest will show more in the first half of the upcommin season that Evans has done for the past 2 years.  Evans could be anything if he had the heart to show his abilities on a consistent basis, if he plays the same as he has done over the last two years at the eels, season 2020 is very likely to be his last season at the eels, with a SL destination being the most likely destination.

If you check out the stats between RCG & Evans, there is absolutely no comparison between them as to who has shown more, in the very same time frame. Evans started the same year as RCG, he's around 6 months older than RCG, played less games and scored less tries, less rep games also..

We have 4 props who have first grade experienc going forward for next season in Jnr, RCG, Evans and Alvaro, they will likely be the 4 that are selected to start the year, and depending on trials, its likely out of Evans and Alvaro who will take the field in round one.  Taka will play in the centres when Blake is out, and on the eels webb site he has been shifted to the backs for next year rather than the forwards he was in this past season.

With Blake possibly out until round 3, the above team list is a bit premature and for me I would see Stone being on the bench as utility, with Taka in the backs.

            • Colin that was like 3 years ago he was at the chooks who were most likely minor premiers with JWH and Napa as starting props. You can’t compare then to now.

Just my opinion but I would prefer to show some loyalty to those who served us this season rather than just hand it all over to a player who has rested on his form from 2 years ago.

I’m not saying Evans has the spot for the entire season. I’m saying that’s who I would pick to start the year and if someone else can do the job better as the season progresses they can step up.
