Something We are Missing - A New Found Calm

Reading through the 1EE aftermath of last nights game,  whilst i sit in Hospital after keeping the ward awake all night after that win, Ive noticed that a lot of fans are missing something very vital in that win We've all discussed the hot and cold way we turn up. We can beat the Premiers and The Storm at home but lose to a Tigers outfit at Parradise. Its our Leadership on the field that is the variable. If our leaders remain calm and focused and keep to the game plan, we can beat any team, if they become flustered, overplay their hand and go away from the game plan well we know the result. Last night I saw two of our best Gutherson and Moses remain calm, sticking  to a game plan, when we varied and started looking out of sorts they brought our players back to the plan. It is vital for our Leaders not just them two - to stand up, remain focused and bring the rest of the boys into the game plan. I thought Moses was exceptional and must take a huge credit for that win.

I came across this article this morning, although it talks more of Moses last night, to me it has equal weight and applies to a couple of Leaders in the team as well.

‘Found peace with his anger’: Moses new-found calm orchestrates rival upset

The Eels broke the Panthers’ 21-game winning streak at home, courtesy of a strong Mitch Moses performance, with NRL legend Corey Parker declaring the star is in “career-best form”.

While Moses didn’t record a single run, and only one try assist, his influence on the side came from his kicking game and organisation, something that cannot be quantified.

The 27-year-old was able to unlock the players around him and continually put his side on the front foot with pinpoint kicks which trouble the Panthers back three of Edwards, To’o and May.

“I think he is in career-best form Mitch Moses, and to be fair although he didn’t have a run, he didn’t have to,” Parker said on Fox League.

“He has got Dylan Brown outside of him, he has got Gutherson, he has got wonderful edge forwards he has got terrific middle forwards.

“I thought Reed Mahoney’s service was terrific but his (Moses’) service and his kicking game certainly laid a platform for what they need to do.

“He is the type of half that doesn’t just run to get a run up on the stats, if there is an opportunity to run he will run, but I thought his balance in his game tonight was outstanding.”

“What you want from your seven, especially in the big games, is to execute your game plan,” Fox League’s Benji Marshall said.

“And deliver that, and what he does is he puts the team in positions to play their best footy and tonight along with his kicking game, and also what he was doing with Dylan Brown, putting him a bit wider, putting Gutho onto the ball, that’s what it is about for Mitch.”

Moses in the past has had a reputation of getting incredibly frustrated on the field, making rash decisions in crucial moments.

This season, the former Tigers half looks calm, remaining level-headed in a manner which has allowed him to marshall his troops around the park effectively.

“The most impressive thing for me for Mitch is his temperament, he had this tendency in the past couple of seasons to get really frustrated and fade out of the game,” Marshall explained.

“He would let that frustration take over, where he might take it out on his teammates, he seems to have found peace with his anger.

“Good on him, he is very influential for this side and when he is playing they go well, he is a big part, if they want to turn around this premiership drought, he is a big part of it.”

“There is an air of confidence around him this year, I know he is a confident young man but there is an air of confidence about him that he knows his game, he is comfortable where he is,” Fox League’s Greg Alexander.

  •  Both Moses and Gutho were very good last night, been saying for ages leadership is a big issue. Maybe they will get there with age and experience. I'm not sure how long this should take? What's important isn't just their own individual performance, but how they influence everyone else in the team and make them play better. And a big part of that is how they react under pressure, and they were good last night. We have turned out these type of regular season performances in the past, I would like to see it when there's more than 2 competition points at stake.

  • He's played with us for 6 years and yet every article I read about Moses they call him the " former Tigers player" .   Did they refer to Thurston as " The Former Canterbury " for the rest of his career ? No.   It's dumb , they do it all the time with him for some reason.  Is Gutho ever " The Former Manly winger ?"
It really irks me that 6 years on they still refer to the tigers .  No other player gets this so far down the track with his current club.

    • And he's a Parra junior too. It's just poor journalism really.

    • makes you wonder.

  • Worth looking at and exploring much further as a key part in improving your performance in what ever you do at a Professional level.

    • A longer form of explanation. If you have time worth trying to understand it.

      • thats next level again.

I was always super impressed in how leaders like Cam Smith just stayed so so calm, and would literally demand his players to get back to the plan.

        • Blue Eel hope you can make some time in hospital to watch that coaches video and get into the mind set of a elite coaches thinking

          I liked it

Hope you're recovery is going well.

  • Junior Paulo, Gutherson, Moses stood up big time last night.

That's what you need from your leaders.

Once we get some consistency in our game, and some of our players back from injury we can be the real deal.
