MELBOURNE fullback Billy Slater has vigorously denied he is a serial sledger and has accused Parramatta players of lying to take the focus off Jarryd Hayne's headbutt, as the war of words continued from Friday night's spiteful clash between last year's grand finalists.
While both players wait to learn if they have been charged by the NRL match review committee - a move that could decide if they play in State of Origin II - Slater took aim at Eels centre Timana Tahu, who had suggested the Test fullback's constant sledging played arole in his opposing number's reaction.
The review committee will see footage today of the entire second-half sequence - from the tackle which resulted in Hayne headbutting Slater to the Melbourne player being sin-binned for leading with his elbow against the Eels star. An earlier clash, in which Slaterappeared to slide in on Hayne with his knees, will also be reviewed, butit is the suggestion Slater crossed the line with his sledging that hasthe fullback riled.
''There was no sledging between me and any Parramatta player,'' Slater told the Herald. ''That was quite disappointing. Obviously I was involved in an incident a while ago with Cory Paterson, and that was a one-off for me.
''I don't regard myself as a sledger, and I certainly learnt from that incident [with Paterson]. So to hear that, I was a little bit shocked. Ask any of my teammates if I'm a sledger.''
