SIGNINGS NADEN AND STAGGS

Whats the news on both Naden and Staggs. They have Naden down as transfering to a rival club. Is that us?

Also Parra seem to be front runners with Stagg as he is reluctant to sign with the Broncos.

Any body know anything?

  • Sorry looks like the Dogs for Naden....

  • Naden is going to the dogs.

Staggs I recon will resign with Broncos, but I wouldn't mind Eels signing him. I don't believe Staggs should be a five-eight. Besides Renoylds, who wants to remain in sydney, there is no pure off-contract organising half which is what Staggs would need to really flourish at five-eight. This is also one reason that is stopping Raiders and Wighton going to the next level. At an NRL level, Williams is more of a five-eight than a halfback. If Staggs came to Eels, I would like Blake to move to the wing, with Kotoni on his inside. Kotoni is a strike center and would provide great service to put Blake in open sapce. Kotoni has good acceleration and top speed whereas Blake has a good top speed. However, our priority should be resigning Moses, Brown, Opacic, Carty, Matto and some of our fringe NRL players, whilst also upgrading Papali'i contract. All depends on how we manage the salary cap and what Moses decided to do as Moses will atleast take up $850k and Staggs will command a lot of money.

    • My thoughts exactly

  • Parra for Staggs must be some serious consideration. There's so many pluses for him to come to Parra vs staying at Brisbane and being up against it each week. I reckon that negotiation will get very interesting.

    • Hopefully he does not want $800K to come here

    • Yea. We will be able to offer him less money than Broncos hopefully given our current form and premiership chances. With Moses, Matto, Brown off-contract I think we cannot resign one of them if we want Staggs. I wouldn't keep Matto if that is the case. However, I would actually offer Lane to another club in order to try keep those three and get Staggs. We our paying him 450k a year and if Matto, Brown, Carty resign, I don't think Lane is in our best 17.

        • 100% let Fergo walk. I would shop Lane around first, and if unsuccessful, Matto may need to leave.

            • I don't think your understanding me. I agree that we have plenty of backrow option. But I rather keep Matto than Lane. Try shop Lane around so we can keep Matto. 450k for Lane is too much.

                • Ok. I understand your point. I just think 450k for Lane is way too much. 250-300k is the max I would pay. But tbh I don't know a lot of the financial part of rugby league salary cap given my age. Matto provides more attack and defense than Lane, despite his 'body type' and I recon 450k is what Matto would be happy with.

                  • The thing is that there are so many moving parts to the Salary Cap that we the public are simply not privy to, even if we have a good idea of players salaries. Most clubs would have at least 4 or 5 complex spreadsheets to manage their cap, and that's just for this year.
