Signing News

The Parramatta Eels are pleased to announce the signings of two players to the squad.

Mitch Rein has signed a one-year extension to remain with the Club for the 2023 season.

With the experience of over 200 NRL games, the hooker adds great depth to the squad.

J’maine Hopgood has also signed with the Club on a two-year deal for the 2023 and 2024 NRL seasons.

The forward is a former Queensland junior State of Origin player, playing for the under-18s in 2017, and the under-20s in 2019.

He played through the grades at the Penrith Panthers before debuting in 2021.

He has played six NRL matches so far.

  • What a letdown.

  • Well Done Parramatta Management.  What a way to keep the fans happy and engaged as we see another top ten player in our roster leave aka Matto.      Rein extends and some rookie.......Im happy to have egg on my face for the rookie but ffs....

  • Ah parra just like 2010 all over again let handful of guns go so we can drop to the bottom

    • The sky isn't falling. Reading some of these comments why don't we just hand back our NRL licence and burn down the leagues club. Everything is the worst...wah wah wah!!! 😩

      • 2 part question Muttman.

        1. Do you think we are a chance at the title this year?

        2. With  a supposed premiership threatening team this year, can we win it next year losing a wealth of talent and experience and replacing them with juniors and journeymen?

The sky isn't falling but it's been 36 years of excuses and some people are over it which is their right.

        • 1) Yes, we're in this up to our eyeballs.
          2) Unlikely.
Do you not ever expect to lose players? Literally every side loses players each year. I'm not happy about losing some players particularly Ice Papali'i but turnover is to be expected. Storm lost Hynes, Finucane and JAC and next year lose Cheese, Bromwich Brothers. I highly doubt they're throwing in the towel. Ditto Penrith who've lost Burton, Capewell and next year Api and Kikau.

And because we haven't signed everyone for 2023 in May we're already screwed?

          • The difference is though Penrith and Storm have talented juniors and from what I have seen of ours, we don't. Just because other clubs can do it doesn't necessarily mean we can.

Yes we haven't signed everyone for 2023 but the ones worth signing or re-signing have signed with other clubs already.

I ain't getting any younger and the more talent we lose with nothing to replace them makes it harder to believe we will win another premiership in my lifetime.

I believe we will hold the record for the longest premiership drought in the games history.

            • Hard to beat the longest drought being North Sydney who had a drought of 77 years. 1922 was their 2nd and last title until they exited the competition in 1999.

We still have 41 years to go haha. Each year we get closer.

        • Totally agree BEM.

We knew we had a huge number of players coming off contract end of this year and yet we could not identify or secure any that even the newest eels supporter would know we need,  to continue our competitiveness.

PS 36 years and counting ...geez SMH

  • Sigh...
