  • Shoulder pads make it harder to catch and pass the ball. They lead to more errors.

  • Shoulder pads just seemed to disappear i remember when i was a young vloke i broke my collar bone and when i came back i was wore sholder pads for a few years. Then suddenly in the late 90s early 2000s people stopped witch does seem odd as the types of pads got lighter and lighter
  • Too hot i always took em off at half-time
  • Thurston still wears shoulder pads they have the bicep cover on them I'm pretty sure
  • Ray Price used to wear shoulder pads and probably Sterlo as well. I'm sure they would be much lighter nowadays than they were then. It wouldn't hurt him anyway, I reckon. The only issue would be the passing and maybe slowing you down a bit but worth a try.
  • Not cool to wear them anymore
  • People also tackle differently these days. Back in the day contact was usually with the point of the shoulder against knees and hips. Nowadays first contact is with the chest against the ball carrying arm.

    • Most good defenders still tackle with their shoulders if they can.
  • I agree with the poster. If he isn't wearing at least thin shoulder pads he should be. And he needs to be taught to hit with his shoulders rather than just catch front on with his chest. He did a decent job of wrapping up the ball carrier Friday night but if he keeps tackling like this he will get bucked off for an easy try
  • Give him a headgear and throw him in the middle he would learn how to tackle soon enough
