Short kick off

Is there anything in the rule book to stop other players elevating a jumper to get the ball? Just watching the rahs game and was wondering if this is allowed. Would be great way of getting the ball back

  • I hate the short drop outs.  WE are quite ordinary and have lost many repeat sets due to the inability to take the ball. Getting repeat sets is hard enough to lose them off a lottery kick and chase is terrible.  I dont think we are good at the execution of them when we are searching for the ball.

    • Agree, fark them off out of our routine.  Cost us more than won. That said, that was not the essance of the question. Can other players legally lift the jumper like in union in a lineout?

      • PS PT, please accept my friend request from my new account.  I need to talk with you.

    • Paul, I agree about the short drop out, I like it when a team is on the attack and win the drop out result from a great in goal kick with chase.

      1.  Time to ensure the drop out has to travel 30m or something similar. This 10m drop out kick distance rule I hate with a passion.

      2. I also hate the stripping rule after defenders have dropped off. Happy for one on one steal but the second or third man get involved on a tackle then all bets are off no stripping allowed.

      3. I also hate the touch football tactics of quick play the balls. You should have to get back to your feet fully first and play the ball backwards with your foot. Just like the rules have always been. Otherwise its a cheat fest in the ruck with quick play the balls that were never supposed to be in footy. The defence have to have that 1/2 second to attempt to get back in a defensive line. - You see heaps of players playing the ball with their hand still on the ground getting up and not touching the ball with their foot as its rolled back. Hate it.

      • Blue Eel, I also hate the stripping rule. Letting multiple players jostle an attacker and get him off balance and then falling off to let one player strip the ball is basically the same as discouraging offloads from attackers. It's too weighted toward the defense.

I agree the drop out rule needs tweaking as well. Again, too weighted toward the defense. Attackers can't touch the ball within the goal line to 10m, even an accidental bounce, and so the defending team gets to make all the choices: where to kick, height of ball, they set runners for it, who are moving forward (attackers on heels to avoid being penalized for touch within the 10), etc. An attacking team has won an advantage through skilled execution and then surrenders all choice to the defense, it's silly.

  • Best I can offer is that under the rules, you cannot lift a player in defence so I can't see how you can lift a player in attack.

  • Ive actually always wondered why Moses with his big boot doesn't practice drilling it over the sideline.

  • It's easy in a lineout, but no way they are doing it for kicks?

    • They do it for kick offs nearly every time in rugby. Usually a prop lifting a 2nd rower. They get about 8ft (arms & torso) off the ground.
