I am a bit of a fence sitter on this subject but it is certainly a hot topic up where I live in Northern NSW with opinions deeply divided. What do our members think is an appropriate response to the increasing number of Shark attacks in fatalities?

  • I spend every summer in Ballina / Byron and I want the nets in asap. The ocean out to the breakers is for humans. Sharks can get culled please.
  • Those bloody Cronulla supporters they are lunatics... Sorry, I'd like to see a warning system rather than catching and killing sharks. Obviously the priority needs to be on human life, but we need to remember the ocean is their territory. I don't know how effective current warning systems are now though.
  • I live on the Gold Coast where there is nets but I see sharks all the time inside these nets and in all honestly it's there territory. It's a game of roullet at the moment stepping in the water can't blame the sharks. No different then waslking out side and seing snakes and spiders there always going to be there and some ones going to get bit eventually.
  • Well it is the sharks ocean, the surfers are having fun in the sharks habitat, the sharks are just doing what Sharks do.

Having said that there is certain species of shark like the white that's numbers need to be controlled, we probably should be charging 100k to catch one, target tourists, put all that money back into fisheries and research.

That would actually create something from a sharks life if its going to be taken, its not all for nothing.

Nets are not the answer, they kill too much innocent byproduct.

  • I am on the coast, and am over nanny state rubbish. I cannot believe govt think it's their right to cull the wonderful creatures.
I've seen them via boats, and we enter the beach or lake or ocean which is where they live. It's called choice. I'm no bloody greeny but when I hear about sharks in media and the drama surrounding it I feel sick. Sharks cop a bad deal, and when we see the finning going on in Asia that makes me sick too.
Really does this happen when someone is bitten by a snake? Spider.? It's dramatic and rubbish. Leave the Noah's alone, it's their domain we enter.,
    • Mitch, I think what most people struggle with idea of being eaten. Snakes kill their fair share but some how it's not the same. I am also on the coast, I don't go in the ocean ever because of sharks. I believe us humans have wiped out better species one more won't hurt .
    • you sound like a bloody greenie

  • CULL THE BIRDS! I'M SICK OF THEM FLYING PAST MY HOUSE!
