Salary Cap Warning

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/dallas-johnsons-salary-cap-alert/story-e6frexnr-1225798378096Another useless article that is written after every grand final. The salary cap has been around for a while now and we all know that the successful teams will lose players. As parra fans we know the pain (and with Brian Smith at the helm we invariably let the wrong guys go).But life without the cap was much worse.

  • I see Jason Ryles has signed with the Sydney City Rorters for the next two seasons. They don't seem to worry about salary cap constraints.
    • Jason Ryles is my early pick for buy of the year. I always rated him even though he copped a negative rap by alot of people. I think this is his chance to prove those people wrong, there is no other reason why he would come back to the NRL. Watch out for him to be pushing for Origin selection.
      • justin poore will be the buy of the year
  • Yeah interesting point I wonder if this is "above Board" I havent looked into it but I would say it would have to count!!
  • Scrap the salary cap all together BUT force each club's first 17 to include at least 5 juniors. Much like South African sports teams were forced to include a quota of black players.

This has three benefits. ONE) The team ACTUALLY represents the district. TWO) Teams can keep their stars. THREE) It would make a great mix of stars and youth - exciting football.

It would also force teams that don't pull their weight in junior development to do so. Yes, Roosters, Sharks, Bulldogs, Cowboys, I AM TALKING ABOUT YOU!
    • The best way to work with the salary cap, I beleive, is not to impose restrictions on incentives provided by advertisers or sponsors. In fact, in the opposite way, we need to encourage this. This way, teams with star players who can market themselves to relevant organisations, will stay long term at their club and have no reason to move on based on cash. Hopefully this will also make teams develop juniors because they know that if their junior talent succeeds they can earn more money externally and wont have teams biting at their heels. Clubs can employ smarter agents to market their players and make them more commercial. This will also mean that players will have to smarten up their acts and hopefully stem any unruly behaviour as players are encouraged to make the big bucks.

It is also attracting money to the game that would not have made it in that circle. Everyone wins.

In addition to this rule, players who make 5 years and 10 years hauls recieve bonuses exempt from salary cap restrictions as well.
    • no salary cap would mean a 4 or 5 team competition very quickly. Love or hate the cap, it is the reason we still have a competition.
  • I say just pay as much money as we have to ,to win the bloody premiership, it works for the storm
  • hahaha well yes we all know the salary cap has problems... however. in 2010 the mighty eels will have i believe the best squad in the comp. so lets just enjoy the ride i think for once we r gunna start the season with a bang!!
  • The salary cap is a joke IMO. It does not help clubs like Penrith or Canberra, and here is my thoughts on why. Lets say a given player is offered $300k by the Rorters or the Gold Coast, and $300k by Canberra. Where would you rather live? It has become apparent in recent years that the Raiders, and to a lesser extent Penrith, have to pay 'overs' to attract big name players that some other, more desirable clubs do not. I feel that the AFL have got it right with their set up. That is a true distribution of talent
