Salary Cap - Realistic Player Values

Is it any wonder we can’t afford to sign a superstar when we are paying our current players massive overs, below is an assessment of what I think the Parramatta Players true market value is:

  1. Clint Gutherson ($600k) – Slow, overrated, failed at origin level.
  2. Maika Sivo ($300k) – Only a good finisher.
  3. Tom Opacic ($250k) – Steady, decent backup player.
  4. Waqa Blake ($200k) – Hasn’t developed a pass under Arthur, winger at best.
  5. Blake Ferguson ($400k) – Still has good carries, not the player he was.
  6. Dylan Brown ($300k) – Has not improved under Arthur, one try assist is not good enough.
  7. Mitch Moses ($650k) – Played origin by default, yet to prove himself in big games, hasn’t improved under Arthur.
  8. Reagan Cambell-Gillard ($700k) – Our best forward, should have played origin over Paulo.
  9. Reed Mahoney ($700k) – The true heart and soul of the side, should be captain.
  10. Junior Paulo ($400k) – Slow and outdated.
  11. Ryan Matterson ($350k) – Good backup or bench player.
  12. Isaiah Papali’i ($600k) – Easily in our best three players if not our best.
  13. Nathan Brown ($400k) – Labelled as the leader of the pack but is far from it.

  1. Will Smith ($200k) – Suited to the current rules but doesn’t see game time.
  2. Marata Nuikore ($600k) – Very underrated.
  3. Shaun Lane ($300k) – Was a decent player 5 years ago.
  4. Bryce Cartwright ($200k) – Only good when we are leading by a good margin, provides no impact off the bench.

  1. Jakob Arthur ($150k) – Needs time.
  2. Haze Dunster ($150k) – Needs time.
  3. Wiremu Greig ($150k) – Needs time.
  4. Keegan Hipgrave ($200k) – Poor buy.
  5. David Hollis ($150k) – Needs time.
  6. Samuel Hughes ($150k) – Needs time.
  7. Oregon Kaufusi ($400k) – Good player on the rise.
  8. Joey Lussick ($200k) – Going ok, nothing more than a good backup or bench player.
  9. Makahesi Makatoa ($200k) – Needs to see first.
  10. Michael Oldfield ($150k) – Poor buy, give a kid a go.
  11. Will Penisini ($200k) – Looks the goods, would be a very good player at Melbourne under a good coach.
  12. Jordan Rankin ($150k) – Poor buy.
  13. Ray Stone ($150k) – Not up to 1st Grade standard.

With an incentive of around $200k per player that has been developed by the club or within the club for 8 or more years, our salary cap would realistically be around $10mill, according to my predictions our side is worth $9.35mill on paper, if we were to tweak a few players that are no longer needed by us we could easily manage a Ponga or Tedesco in our side (lets be honest Trobojevic isn’t ever leaving Manly).

Who’s to blame for such poor management of our Salary Cap? Paying overs for players was a thing of the past and if the club is firm on their stance they will be letting Gutherson walk.

Thoughts?

Sincerely,

Scott

  • The problem with your assessment, while reasonably rational, is that the figures you quote are your value. Ultimately the player values are determined by the market, not what any one individual person thinks a player might be worth.

Take Mitch Moses for example. My understanding is that we had to pay somewhere between 900k and 1mil per season to keep him. With the Broncos lurking in the background and talk of 1mil per season being offered, this is no surprise. If no other club had been chansing him, we pretty much could have named our price.

The biggest problem I see the Eels having with salary cap management is the lack of TPAs. Image if we could have topped up Moses with a 200k TPA...

  • I read the first two sentences then realised the whole blog is rubbish

    • Thanks for your input Brett, as per usual it was very intellectual of you.

      Cheers,

      Scott

      • The problem with people like you is you think of a roster and the salary cap as static. It's not, it's a dynamic environment that can change on a daily basis. Your valuation of players is based on current form and has zero relevance to the actual world that clubs & players operate in.

You don't even understand how the salary cap works. You don't get 200K per player for players who have long service, it's 200K TOTAL that can be used across a number of players who fit the criteria.

I'm not gonna argue your valuations because they are rubbish, and in any event your total for our whole roster is $9.55m, when the cap is set at $9.02m for this season.

What about bonuses, incentives & appearance fees ? Where are you gonna fit those in the cap when we are already 530K over the cap under your player estimations ?

Do some research, educate yourself, then come back with your opinions.

        What waste of time.

  • Thanks Scott, I stopped at Gutho-- slow and overated.

  • Gutho 650 max imo I agree Scott... As a captain he should have sacked Ayub as the dope previously dragged the eels through the mud with his last contract. I would deduct 100k off Gutho as he isn't captain material and sets a bad example of how to manage contract negotiations.

Waqa, ba signed for 4 years. Only the elite should be signed for 4 years, not an average centre.

Dylan also looks lost under Arthur and isn't developing.

  • We're paying massive overs? Said who?

    • How often do you publicly hear clubs are chasing Parramatta players?

Been few whispers about the Raiders interest of late in a few but apart from that there's nothing.

Why aren't they interested, is it because they are already on more than their actual ability/form represents.

      Scott

  • Scott are you a horse trader ? Like to beat down the asking price do you ? The proverbial " tyre kicker" ? Imagine then if you were entrusted to build an NRL team . With your generosity you would not secure many good players except for the odd desperate ones. And it would get harder each year , as your reputation would precede you causing player agents to avoid you. You might be lucky securing a Watmough or Foran , or baggage from time to time and that would be about it .

    • The hilarious part is that under his valuations we would be 530k over the cap line, and that doesn't even take into account bonuses etc.
