Salary cap and signing players

Sorry for a silly sounding question here

Is there a limit to how many players a team can sign? I know there is cap and how that plays into the eligibility to play for points, but in the last few weeks I've seen clubs like the Bulldogs sign a lot of players then once they got say 50 (example number) sort through who they have, pick their top 30 from that, then decide who to let go or release from their contract. I know players aren't always going to gel together and the same for coaches, but I'd have thought that would go against the whole idea of the fairness of the cap as you are essentially hoarding players, preventing other teams from sorting their rosters and chasing players clubs actually think will fit rather than 'get em all, sort em later' type thing, or am I just not seeing it properly?

  • Well if you are picking from 50, then the 20 left over will be on minimum wage, if they are worthy they leave for a top 30 spot elsewhere. If a player is happy to be on minimum and play in NSW cup then that is on them.

    • That makes sense LB thanks for helping clarify

  • I have just had this conversation with my missus. I agree totally with what you are saying, the Dogs did similar at the end of last season. The NRL should stop this. I believe clubs don't need to be under the cap until a certain time in the following season, so Gus buys any player he thinks will fit into the team and when it comes to the deadline offloads the players he doesn't want.

    • Well the bulldogs apparently just signed Salmon from the panthers for 24 and 25

who wants to bet Luai ends up there too?

      • Canberra goin hard for Luai

        • As if he would go to Canberra but. He will go to dogs due to having former teammates there, living in Sydney and near his family.

          Canberra is hard to attract.

  • Teams can sign as many players as they want as long as the top 30 salaries fit under the cap.

    • So would that mean hypothetically, someone could sign on $500k but be outside of their top 30? Not that it would make any sense to do that, but if the funds were there, it would be possible, right?

      • No, it would be impossible to have 30 players on $500k or more.

You can't sign players if it puts you over the cap,  technically you can but have to be under the cap by a certain date. You can't sign players and then release them without it counting on your cap.

          • The rules are different in the NFL. Because most NFL contracts are non guaranteed or only partially guaranteed, the NFL allows players to be paid the entire guaranteed section of the contract up front in a lump sum as a signing bonus, but the team can pro rata that signing bonus in the salary cap across the term of the contract.
That's how the Chiefs were able to pay Patrick Mahomes $450m over ten years. About $175m was fully guaranteed and paid in instalments up front, but spread out pro rata on the Chiefs salary cap for the next ten years. The rest of his contract is non guaranteed although "likely to be earned".
