Ryan Matterson

This dude looked pretty good today. Why'd we let him go when we need depth in our halves?

  • Good on him for making his debut. Is he really going to be a half in years to come?

I saw him playing for Wyong Roos last week and he was bigger than most of the forwards. Didn't get his jersey dirty in the second half either.
    • Big halves are the future. Only old fools insist halves must be midgets who cannot tackle. There is nothing stopping a big man from having skills, except poor coaching.

He won Man Of The Match for Wyong that week, I suggest you are assassinating his character by inferring he "did not get his jersey dirty".

The kid just played first grade and came up with two assists and a try on debut. Pretty impressive.

  • Cornish has more NRL experience and is a good back up half to have in the squad. Matterson did well today and didn't look that out of place. I thought his kicking game was his best asset today. Good on him for getting an NRL opportunity and showing some of the talent he has. But you can't hang onto a player forever on just talent, his efforts for Wenty last year didn't help him. Compare them to Cornish who has been one of their best each week this year

    • An ok game? set up 1 try, scored another, brilliant kicking game close to the line. Over on the Chook Pen, they are calling it "one of the best debuts in some time" and the "next freddie fittler". Definitely a major loss.

  • Because our club has always let go of promising juniors who go on to excel at other clubs. We have only groomed a few into our first grade side like Paulo. Plus he couldn't see himself playing first grade at Eels this year.

    • Do you know what the Roosters are paying him or offered him as far as a chance at a FG spot?

Maybe it was a better chance and or money than we could offer.

To be fair, the games I saw him play for Wenty last year were pretty ordinary. Maybe being shown the door was a kick up the arse he needed. Pauli was the same as was Davis.

We had a very bad culture in the juniors ie an entitlement. So BA showing a few the door was a wake up to everyone. But unlike Ricky, BA knows how to offload a player and make it a positive eg He and Pauli embracing after the Nines game.

  • Put it this way he sign a 3 year deal to stay with us and then not long later he sign with the roosters

and I tell you why we let him go after he sign a 3 year deal to stay with us because we are mad letting good young players go like Matterson and Now Paulo

  • I've said this before, I'll say it again and I'm happy for someone to bookmark the following statement and remember it some years down the track.

We let Ryan Matterson go because he was bog average.

He enjoyed some success in Holden Cup when he started out with us, even if he had not truly found his position within the team. He alternated between five-eighth and lock excessively.

In 2014, when we had a shit-house of a Holden Cup year, he and Dockar-Clay - who we all know has also left - left the team high and dry with poor decisions, bad plays and costly mistakes.
They didn't lead teams like they should have.

2015 came and Matterson had a chance to turn things around at Wentworthville. There was promise from myself and others that he could do so, still believing in him.
But he was average. He did hardly anything, didn't play well and couldn't handle the step up to NSW Cup. He was demoted and played mostly Ron Massey Cup and potentially some Sydney Shield.
He didn't really crack our NSW Cup side again after that.

With all that in mind and with the coaching staff's approval, he left. He joined the Sydney Roosters on a 1 or 2 year deal and was also contracted with their feeder club in Wyong.

As Jimmy has alluded to, his return game with Wyong from a broken leg last week was again, average. He looked ok in the first half but was nowhere to seen in the second.
He is a five-eighth playing in a lock's body and belongs at lock.

Everything I've seen of him over the last 18-24 months, suggests to me that he will not play first-grade long-term.
He'll play 50 games tops over 5-6 years if he's lucky and then won't play again after that, simply disappearing off the map.

And he's playing out of necessity. He wouldn't make a full strength Roosters side.

And let's be real here. He didn't have this AMAZING game that so many think he did. He laid on a decent pass for a try and then scored one that a 5-year old could have scored from two metres out.
He made errors and mistakes, had a shite kicking game and was indecisive in attack. He was average, plain and simple.

    • and through a no look pass that led directly to an intercept try. I like Matterson, but having one good game does not make a football player.

    • spot on Ricky.

There were times even at training that Ryan was claiming to have injury strains, holding his arm up wanting to walk off, then to be seen looking completely uneffected not long after he walked off the field.

I hate to say it but the guy just seemed to have no heart (anyone remember the calls of "fleabag" being yelled out to him during his last few Wenty games??).

He always showed signs of loads of promise, but his heart is what let him down.

I can only imagine how Beau Scott would have treated this bloke at training (anyone remember reading the story of when Scott smashed IDG at training, standing over him saying "is that all you've got?").

      Best of luck to Ryan.
