I love league and I think part of the reason I love it is because the rules have evolved with the game.
Upon discussing some issues in the game at the moment it got me to thinking what rule changes would I be looking to implement or elevate in the game.
I don't like the amount of wrestle and gang tackling that is occurring. I think it increases the risk of injury and moves away from the spirit of the game.
I would like to see earlier held calls and rules banning the unnecessary involvement of a third tackler.
I would reduce the interchange to 6 but I would allow teams to have a five man bench with one player that can come in for either concussed or injured player (NRL doctor ruling)
For me there are two many injuries occurring in the game and the creative players are being cancelled out a bit by the slowing down of play with the wrestle.
Thought I'd see what other 1eyed Eels would suggest in the rules department?

To reduce wrestle I'd decrease the defensive line to 7 metres. I don't think there's anything wrong with the wrestle and there's other ways to reduce it so wouldn't be touching this rule. The defence still needs to be somewhat reset.
Increase interchanges to 10, possibly 12.
Reduce time the ball is out of play. Timers on scrums (30 seconds), goal-line drop outs (20 seconds), and conversion kicks (1 minute).
Increase bench size to 8. 4 must have played a reserve grade game beforehand and can only be used if there's injury or concussion which will be deemed by an NRL appointed doctor.
Reduce the amount of refs on the field back to 1.
Limit the involvement of the video ref, only allow them to look at put-downs and if the player stepped out.
Stop the referees from making a decision before they send the call up to the video ref, its stupid and is preventing video refs from ruling on the play as a neutral view.
No more refs changing their mind because they see a replay or are told by the video ref.
No more putting players on report on the field. It just wastes time and the MRC look at the games afterwards anyway so if they believe that an incident should be put on report then they will make that decision.
Bring in a 5-minute sin bin.
Bring back the shoulder charge. There was nothing wrong with the action in the first place, the reason it was banned was because idiots like inglis decided to start launching themselves at players and the result was that the player was hit high.
I agree with much of what you have said Ham.
In SL the video refs have a timer put on them, not sure for how long, but bring that into NRL, say 30 secs. How many times have you seen the first replay and formed an opinion but the video refs look at every angle before making a decision. Gould hates it, I hate it and I'm sure the majority hate the constant replays and they still get it wrong!!! Like the refs, as long as the video refs get it right 99% of the time the 1% doesn't matter.
Can we please bring back the biff? I hate these niggling tactics knowing nothing can be done.
Maybe 10 in the bin max penalty. Some would think it worth it.
That's the sort of thing the 5-minute sin bin would be used for. Means that players only miss 2 sets of attack and 2 sets of defence whereas with 10 you're looking at missing much more. The worst thing the NRL did was openly state that any punch would result in a 10 minute sin bin because that meant that players were always going to try their hardest to antagonise the opposition into punching them.
Agree again. This slapping stuff is just BS. Remove automatic sendoffs for punchups and replace with 5 minutes in bin. Great idea. Re calling held and third man in - best option is compulsary call of held as soon as a third man comes in. This takes all of the refs judgement away and is a fair way of cutting down on the wrestle. The game needs to be slowed down. This idiotic obsession with continually speeding up the game is leading to more injuries and more wrestling. If it gets any quicker we will be seeing sleeper holds and the abdominal stretch
In the scrum I'm crying out to go back to the old days of feeding the scrum, having the hookers compete for the ball instead of throwing it into the 2nd row, feed it in the middle. What's the point of having the scrums when no one competes for the ball. Have the one ref on the field instead of two. I was a big fan of having two refs but now I find it confusing and hate it. More pitch invasion like the good old days when the kids used to invade the fields, remember that? I like the ten meter rule, give the team some breathing room. Bring back Reserve Grade. Bugger the video ref off...actually thenm again, the VidRef can be handy in some respect...oh and ban trolls from this site...and make it legal to punch the ref in the face if he gets his calls wrong or at least give him the Liverpool Kiss
