Ruck Penalties - the scrum Penalty of the new age?

The NRL have opened a whole new bag of "Piss me Off" with these ruck penalties. It's the ref's chance to blow the pea out of the whistle and it opens up a can of worms for inconsistency. It was only a trial today but I've had enough already. Talk about a ref decision costing games, here it comes. For those who never knew scrum penalties, a ref could blow a penalty at every scrum if he wanted and he could never be wrong. It decided grand finals (hello 1976). It could decide many matches this year. Look out.

  • "It's only a trail but I've had enough already". That's a classic line. I hear you, Like you I remember the scrum penalties, lots of hair pulling and blood pressure spikes. Yep the ruck penalty is the scrum penalty of the new millennium
  • HAHAHA Some frustrating times ahead sixtiesboy

  •  Agree 100%. Never give referees the option. They will use it to destroy most teams. It is a foollery of Bennett and the East coach who dominate that group. The real problem is the fetish to have a fast game. I say again a fast game does not mean a better game. It will be on again next year with some absurity to speed up the game.

  • Hearing you sixties.  And the other thing they do is "ping the rookie" ahead of anyone else.

  • Personally I ike the rule, far less wrestle today and once both sides adjusted it was really fast tempoo, but its only early days.

  • Can't agree. The inconsistency was there for all to see.
    • Fair enough, my take was there were far too many penalties to the home side in the first half and agree was very incosistent, but the refs gave them a little space ttowards the end. I guess only time will tell

    • Agree 60's...this rule will be inconsistent for the early rounds...then like all these nrl brain child rule changes.. it will be to hard to enforce... & will go by the wayside...then we will be back to same old crappy frustrating ruck.....

  • It's that issue on strict then lenient, then home side preference. Look the wrestle is frustrating too, but you don't want touch footy speed,
    • Yeah. So many times at the game I was left shaking my head. Even when we got the penalty. It was soft and stupid. don't they realise that blowing a penalty every set of six slows the game down even more.

"I really like Samrani but if JR decides to give him up for MB I think that is a massive mistake.
IMO Samrani should be 1st drop for either centre/ wing if one of our starters is out. Brian Kelly is bog average and not going to get better.
