Rothfield - Way to fix eels team

Phil Rothfield has stated in his daily blog today that, tomorrow he is going to do a blog about a simple way to 'fix' the eels.I didn't know that we were actually 'broken' but it would be interesting to see what 'simple' solution he has.I am tipping it will be to shift Mateo to the halves and maybe Mortimer to 7.

  • Oh jeez this guy doesn't have a fecking clue.

His fix will to play Mortimer 7 and Mateo at 6 then probably move Smith to lock, Cayless to the bench (or second row) and Fui to start. With Robson on the bench and KK gone.

Even though it is clear as day (especially after fridays performance) that Morts is nowhere near the 7 jersey yet.
  • I don't think he's ready for it, but I think he should probably be given it any way. This is what I've taken out of the weekend, I think Ando has three options.

    Option 1
    6. Mortimer 7. Robson 14. Keating (Dummy half)
Simplest option is a straight swap for last year with Keating and Kingston. We'll win a lot of games with this formula, it's safe but it's a poor use of one of our best talents in Keating and there is fewer points in it than some of our other options.

    Option 2
    6. Mortimer 7. Keating 14. Robson
My preferred option, but from what I hear Mortimer wants to be a half, Robson wants to be a half, Keating wants to be a six, so you've got players all in positions they'd rather not be playing.

    Option 3
    6. Keating/Robson 7. Mortimer 14. Robson/Keating
Once you move Mortimer to seven, Robson and Keating can be used and interchanged without a lot of impact on the side because they've been moved into a supporting role. Problem is Mortimer is probably not ready for it.

Right now, I'd prefer to see option 3, because I don't think option 2 is going to happen and I don't think option 1 is going to take us forward. Our game doesn't necessarily need a dominant seven as we saw last year.

I guess I just want to see Ando make a definitive decision on who he wants where and whatever they might be, stick with it because the swapping about didn't work on Friday night.
    • I would have to agree with you once again 1eyed, option 3 with keating at 6 and mortimer at 7 is the best one.
You would have to feel that DA also thinks that mortimer is not ready for the 7 but he is going to end up there eventually so throw him in the deep end and let him swim, as you stated parra dont need a dominant half so he wont have to work miracles to be effective plus it would give kk the opportunity to excel at 5/8 which is his best and prefered position.

DA really got it wrong on fri night with the swapping around of positions with kk, hope it hasn't totally destroyed kk's confidence cause he was lost at times on fri night.
  • Fix us after one game LOL

    What a douche
  • wont make me buy the paper. Its the first game of the season for gods sake.
  • It was the first game of the season and the good old Telegraph is going to come to the rescue. I think not.

Really, Rothfield is on a hiding to nothing here. He can say Mateo to 6, Mortimer to 7 - or whatever. If the club do it and they win, he'll say he's a genius. If the club don't do it, and they win, he'll say they would have won more easily if they'd listened. If they don't do it and they lose, he'll say "I told you so".

At the end of the day, this was by far the most quality game of the round, we got out gunned up front, and were up against it with the refs calls. And we still could have won!

I'll trust Ando before Rothfield thank you very much.
  • And if they do adopt his changes and they lose he will just avoid any further talk on the issue and call people gibberrerers.

Rothfield and his blog is like the new talkback radio princedom previouly seen from guys like John Laws and Alan Jones - post blogs he likes, and those he thinks he can easily deride and ignore rationale counterarguments like the plague.
  • That is an easy one. Don't drop the ball and take your chances. We did enough to score enough points when you look at the stats.
  • how to fix us???

hold the ball occasionally for a start
put the work in and dont believe all the hype said about them

but most importantly, lets get a ref that doesnt cheat ( aka Mr Archer ) and we will be fine then
  • And improve the kicking game...looks like we've covered it.
