Rothfeild

Phil Rothfeild's blog today is about 10 ways to improve the NRL. Have a read then please let us kno ur thoughts. His 10 ideas are as follows. Here are my 10 ideas:1 Clubs sell only 10 home games to season ticket holders and move sold out blockbuster matches to bigger stadiums.2 Dump the McIntyre finals system and take up the AFL system where the top four sides are guaranteed a second chance. Play all finals at neutral venues.3 Do the entire draw in advance with days of the week nominated at the start of the year so fans can plan flights and weekends.4 Introduce 5-point tries if they are scored in first three tackles of a set. Will take away the boredom of five hit-ups and a kick.5 Introduce golden try instead of golden point. Teams would thrown the ball about instead of hitting up for a field goal.6 Bring in Central Coast and a second Brisbane team. Extra game could be played as viewers choice on Sunday afternoons at 2pm.7 Break the competition into two conferences. The Sydney clubs in one and the out-of-towners in the other. Winner of each conference plays in grand final.8 Play Origin on weekends. English Premier League takes a break for internationals without worrying about TV rights.9 Scrap City v Country - it’s a total waste of time.10 Play three games a year at the Sydney Cricket Ground between traditional rivals.Personally the idea of 2 conferences much like the nfl system intrigues me. i belevie while it is a good proposition the sydney conference would be tootough. i woudl be happeir with a north and south conferences with 8 teams in each.Thoughts??

  • Point 7 is a dud! The goal is to get the two best sides in the comp play in the GF. If that happens to be 2 Sydney teams or 2 out-of-towners is irrelevant!
  • 1 - Ok in theory but when is the decision made which games are blockbusters

2 - I think the AFL system is no better than the McIntyre. Personally I'd rather see a top 6. I think the finals should be played at a Home City arrangement in 1st week only.

    3 - Completely

4 - Ridiculous, another Buzz lack of brain-storming

5 - Yes, I hate golden point in it's current form. Scott Prince wants a penalty shoot out which is even worse

6 - Central Coast maybe, 2nd Brisbane team no. Does he remember the SQ Crushers, Brisbane won't support 2 teams? A Sunshine Coast team would be a better idea.

7 - Is he joking, why not just introduce ARL & Superleague again, or NSWRL and QRL comps as the top comps. All his idea will do is have one conference stronger than the other with most likely the out of Sydney teams being the strongest. With a NSW perspective it will make it cheaper for Sydney teams to operate as they won't have to fly around the place and pay accomodation.....

8 - A stand alone game for sure

    9 - I like City v Country

10 - Has merit but you will probably get more people watching it on TV than going

    Interesting post though mate!
    • 6. i think i heard in the news a while ago now that they were talking about a regional qld town like rockhampton, its about the size of newcastle so i dont see how that wouldnt work there
      • That would work too. QRL has pumped some $$$ into Central Pride in the QLD cup for that same reason.
  • Point 1, I don't like it, I am a season ticket holder and I hate our home games played at ANZ it really SUCKS
I like City Vs Country more footy to watch.
Most of his points are dud.
Watching footy at the SCG??? no thanks. Every one keeps raving about how good Suncorp is and I agree it is a great place to watch footy were you are close to the action I was there for the world cup final. and I have been to the SCG and hate it.
    • I watched the Centenary Test at the SCG last year and paid $40 for the worst seat in the house. I was at ground level on the side of the field. About 30m in front of me were the sideline signs. I had to stand up to see over them! The playing field was so far away from where I was sitting and I really had no idea whether they were in the 10m area or the in goal. A massive waste of $40.
The SFS is purpose built and it has its own tradition. Footy has been played there for a number of years (even before it became the SFS) and it is a sensational stadium for watching the football. I know Homebush holds way more people but the days of the SFS grand finals were fantastic.
  • Does he not contradict himself with points 1 and 3? How do you determine what games will be blockbusters? Take the Eels and Dogs matches this season. During the first half of the season the Eels were struggling so the numbers at the first game at ANZ were low. Come the prelim final and it was a near sellout. How can you pre determine what your blockbuster games will be a whole season in advance? If one team has a bad year and is struggling then your blockbuster becomes a dud.

During the season they announce the games 7-8 weeks in advance. Surely that is enough time to organise a trip to an away game.

Point 7 is ridiculous and point 10 would be good for traditional teams like Souths, Roosters, and Tigers but watching footy on an oval game is not ideal.

I believe Origin should be a stand alone event on a weekend. It will only lengthen the season by 3 weeks. If they want some extra games on the weekend then have an under 20's State of Origin and perhaps a NSW 2nds side vs QLD 2nds side. This would give those players on the fringe of selection an opportunity to show they can step up to the next level. It can also mean the scrapping of city vs country.
    • Agree it would be lunacy to plan the whole season in advance, as you say it would mean your best game may not even be on free-to-air
  • I like all ideas expect:
2 - The McIntyre system works fine why change it the only problem is the grounds and that not even a big one I though this year they had it all right it was just such a close competion it could have gone anyways as it did.
7 - Wouldn't be the same and just not as much competition for teams like Melbourne and teams like Canberra would strugle big time.
9 - The NSW origin people use it to pick the team why scrap it...
  • i'd like to see try's off kicks reduced to 3 points and all other tires increased to 5 points

id also like to see bonus points come into play such as if you score more than 6 tries you get a bonus point or aslo if you keep the opposition tryless you get a bonus point

id also like to see field goal increased to 2 points as it is is exciting to watch

also 40/20 is great so we should ibntroduce 30/30, 50/10

    your thoughts...
