Respecting the Opposition, its not just the players.

The coach in his presser pointed out we did not respect our opponents in the first half.

Brissyeel wrote a blog on some supporters going off half cocked!

I thought about this and the theme coming through the negative nellies that if we perform like that against a top 4 team, we will go down by 50 etc etc.

The overall summation was that Brisbane were a shit side, last years spooners and we would win by any old margin..... well I am going to create a situation that those same people do not think laterally about. I even question some of them having a capacity to think that way.

When I looked at that Broncos side 24 hours ago, I thought, they didn't have obvious weaknesses, Croft was good enough to play for Storm, Milford on his day is an X factor play, Pangai is as good as any young forward on his day. Carrigan and Lodge are a pretty tough pair up front and Coates on the wing could be anything...etc etc...I posted beware of the ambush....Why? This team have a wonderful array of young players coming through, not to mention one that we want badly and are unlikely to get....Staggs. Throw in Payne Haas and a full strength Broncs can beat any one on a given day.

Brisbane is a proud club and Walters whilst unproven is a blood and guts type.....this team have had massive press in Qld and the expectations have been driven to any length's that people in Sydney could not understand if any club in that locale was afforded the same.

So we enter an arena (home town) against a side prepared to do anything to prove they are not shit. I think we got lucky they got the injuries they did. That said our blokes with backs to the wall lifted their line speed to another level.

Our own supporters disrespected Bronc's just like our own players.

Parra played bad, but usually that happens if you don't respect your opponents and your opponents are playing in their eyes a grand final.i.e. usually you can only play as well as your opponents let you.

This Brisbane side will be capable at some time of the year of beating anyone, with a full and fit side....assuming the coach can go on with it and they don't become demoralised.

Maybe Parra did a lot better than we understand and we should be more respectful not just of our opponents but of our OWN SIDE as well.

Maybe our fans should be showing more respect to the fact, every one out (all teams) there is busting their guts and it is not possible to be at your top all the time.

Remember everyone you are only as good as the opposition allows you to be!

  • Broncos played well, they should be proud, and will be better with Hass back. The test is whether they drop their heads after 4 or 5 close losses which is inevitable unfortunately this year. They can't expect results overnight, only improvement. Before BA,and I'll say that again just to stir the pot, before BA,that was us,losing the close games or simply losing heart when we were 16 nil down and getting flogged. That is the difference with where we are as opposed to where we were, the belief that,if you compete and complete then you can overcome. Now for some of our fans to start believing.Believe in what we can achieve .

    • Thanks Eggie, you saw it like I did.....where are the Nellies?

    • I didn't see that and i am a RL Supporter.... how do you speak for every/Any....did you not understand what the blog was about.....can you think laterally or in turn understand what that means....how personally do you operate in a think tank environment, what role or tactic would you use.

Ah! now I know what you mean, Parra shooting  itself in the foot is a process of self destruction? is that it? any ideas why?

  • Poppa I think nothing much changed from where we left off last year. The new rules made no difference to how we played. That is what disappointed me most. Can we improve.Possibly and probably slowly..It looks like possession control is going to kill us. Poor timing and cohesive support runners is still an issue and unlikely to change much. The only area we can improve is in defence—- that’s not enough

    • Not sure I have the answers Tad, I suspect they cannot change and I am searching for the answer or reason.... it will require a lot of thought.....its easy to say what we should do .....but the question is how.

Iwould be interested in Hoe & Daz's thoughts as lateral thinkers as to what you could do to change them and be effective.

Personally I want to watch some other sides to see how they handle this. Contrary to what a lot more are thinking, my perception is the teams have got wider this year than last.....and the last 15/20 minutes the middle is really opening up.

      • The answers Pops? I can,t go again with ugly wins anymore. I honestly think BA has reached his potential----no criticism of that --we all have our limitations and we should treat him with respect for what he has done for us so far..The honourable thing to do is for a shared coaching role. With whom --I don,t know. We can,t make a mistake. with who will fit that role. Gould did well with appointing Cleary. I would try and suss out who can make that type of selection best..Some times key players can carry a coach through a successful season. I don,t think we have them. I would look for a coach that can carry players to do it. There are a lot of Bellamy proteges running around who haven,t made the grade. B A included... Selecting someone to assist in that role is beyond me. A big test for the calibre of management we have.I think we have some players who will not be able to play to their full potential the way it is now.

        • Tad

          you are soooooo right

I’ll give an analogy . It’s like in my job we see a child who has signs at 2 yrs old that could signify developmental concerns or that they are neurotypical and need extra support - but we wait to see further maturation . We get to 3-4 years of age sand there’s been no progress and it’s clear maturation is not helping . Intervention and assessment is needed - perhaps a psych or OT . If we don’t do this AT THIS TURNING POINT IN TIME, this child starts behind at school and crucial years of intervention is lost

This is how I see Parra atm . We are all dancing around the fact this “ child” is clearly needing intervention but no one is brave enough to call it .

          • Yes Carlo.I think we all have our limitations. Some are aware of them and will be open to intervention, others simply will not be open to that.I think we have to understand that --it is part of all of our makeup. Be compassionate in dealing with them and accept we have to move on as it is affecting progress in others as well.

            • The problem is if you miss the “ window “ there’s incremental loss . That’s what I worry about . You ignore a festering problem then you miss the window ( when you have the right team w wrong coach )

then right team slowly disentegrates due to no premiership and poaching .... and you never get the chance to see what THE RIGHT TEAM CAN DO WITH THE RIGHT COACH 🤨🙄🙄🙄

              • Yes Carlo I think you need quality personnel who can make those calls with regard to decision making. Astute risk management and good judgment to make sure you get the right coach for the right team. When you are too close with the people you are assessing your decision-making can easily be clouded.
