Referee Gerard Sutton 2

I was very interested prior to the recent match between Parra vs Penrith last Thursday night to see which of the two teams had the best winning percentage under referee Sutton and sure enough Penrith did. I was still hoping that Sutton would at least be 50/50 in the calls not favouring either team. However despite some Eels stupid errors and poor decisions they played exceptionally well and I think deserved to win. They were clearly robbed by some absolute diabolical refereeing by Gerard Sutton. I've now done a 'Google' search to get a list of ALL the NRL teams and their winning percentage under referee Gerard Sutton. I think it speaks for itself.

1) Storm 69%

2) Penrith 61%

3) Broncos 57%
4) Roosters 56%
5) Souths 56%
6) Manly 55%
7) Sharks 54%
8) Knights 47%
9) Cowboys 46%

10) Warriors 44%
11) Raiders 43%
12) Bulldogs 41%
13) Dolphins 38%
14) Titans 37%
15) Eels 37%
16) Tigers 34%
17) Dragons 32%

  • Is this from 2009 when he started reffing NRL?

What are these % showing us?

Over time, the top 4 teams have been the best in the comp and the bottom 4 have been the worst?

Did we lose games with Sutton as ref in 2022? If yes, then who did we play? If one of the other low % teams, then that may actually tell us something.

    • They're showing us that clearly Sutton gives better calls and more favourable refereeing decisions to the more top of the ladder teams than the cellar dwellers and perhaps the favourable refereeing decisions actually help certain teams stay closer to the top or am I just imagining that

      • Well if he reffed the Panthers against a lot of lower teams they'd naturally get a good % of wins. Same goes with Storm etc.

% by themselves don't tell us a lot except the end result.

We need penalty counts, 6 against counts etc to show if they are only actually favourable calls or just wins. Like % of times Parra has lost the penalty count with Sutton as ref.

Not saying you're wrong but more evidence other than win % is needed.

  • Bit of a mute point when comparing winning percentage with Penrith as every ref they have a good record with due to how much they have won over the last 6 years.

    • It's not a mute point! So your ok with Suttons deplorable refereeing decisions and percentages favouring the top of the ladder teams

      • Perhaps not a "mute" point, but maybe a moot point..

        • Yeah my phone autocorrected lol.

      • Did you read what i just said? When comparing v Penrith, every single referee percentage is going to be high. So no point comparing v Penrith when they have won so many games.

You are not going down this whole "Penrith are only good because of the ref" rubbish again are you? We had 20 mins with an extra man and scored 0 points.

        • Your entitled to your opinion but doesn't mean your correct and every one else isn't. Of course Penrith have won more games which is obvious by them being on top of the ladder. However, the higher percentage under Suttons refereeing isn't necessarily because they're a more disciplined team that makes less infringements but also perhaps because that referee Sutton gives them more leeway, more repeat sets, less being penalised and turns a blind eye to their infringements like he did last Thursday night. If you think the Eels weren't robbed of a win by diabolical Sutton refereeing then you must have watched a different match

          • We had 20 mins, i repeat 20 mins with an extra man and scored 0 points. How is that not an advantage to us??? Explain to me how we were robbed when given a quarter of the game with an extra man, we ended up losing by 6 so at least one try in that section helps.

Not saying the reffing was great, but did it cost us? Explain to me how 20 mins with an extra man was not an advantage.
