Recruitment and Retention Nostradamus

I thought I'd start a blog with a light hearted tone, to see how close 1Eyed members can predict the future.
So the stage has now been set. We all know who the Coach is, we know which players are up for grabs in 2023.......what is going to happen?
I'll go first:
Papalii stays after securing a decent upgrade.
Marata leaves after the Warriors table an offer the Eels can't match. Something north of $500k a season.
Mahoney recieves some very decent offers from Broncos and Dolphins. After much conjecture he stays at Parra on a big deal in the vicinity of $800k a season.
Gutho and his manager drag their entire negotiation through the media and well into 2022. In the end, due to a lack of reasonable alternatives he eventually (and very quietly) accepts a deal in the vicinity of his original 2 year extension. The saga sours the relationship and the club makes serious inroads into securing his eventual repacement.
Dylan Brown extends on good but not OTT coin.
Matterson negotiates a deal elsewhere and Parra pay some of the freight.
(Can we please not turn this into a BA bashing session). Just a bit of off-season fun.

  • I think Dylan Brown will be the highest paid player at our club in the not too distant future. Other players (namely Gutho and Matterson come to mind immediately) are going to have to accept a reduced offer in order to stay is the way I think it will play out.

  • But but, BA bashing sessions are fun. Ok Waqa Blake is upgraded by BA on $800K for 4 years as the games premier centre. Lane is upgraded and extended, Matto leaves, Marata leaves, Reed leaves, RCG leaves,Papa is upgraded but plays middle where he losees his effectiveness and his value diminishes, Cartwright stays but is turned into a mindless middle grunt, N Brown stays, plays the same power game, but his small frame begins to breakdown on him and he spends more time in rehab than on the field. Gutho accepts the 2 year deal, Sivo returns from knee reconstruction, but is even slower and less engaged in the game and is shopped around to union. MM see's out his contract and retires to buy half of Beirut. D Brown is upgraded to the million $ player level. BA is extended into 2030.

    • Lol sadly I can see quite a bit of this happening.

I can see us losing RCG, Marata and Matto, the club will cave on Guth and give him what he wants.  I think Mahoney will stay on a well deserved upgrade and Paulo will also get an upgrade.

We'll make the 8 again next year and it will be enough to keep the fans and board happy and it will be a case of rinse and repeat for the next two years while we fail to be a real contender and our supposed premiership will be gone like last weeks pay.

The only hope for us are some of the young talent coming through, Russell looks very good and hopefully can pressure our captains spot by 2023.  Penisini continues to improve and hopefully Hollis and Greig can step up to fill the void by RCG.

      • Al, you can't see anything happening....focus on the ponies....you have no idea about football. How many times do I need to explain it to you!

Russell has some potential but I am not convinced yet.....RCG thinks he is going to get a big pay....ain't going to happen. Reed is the one we are in danger of losing, Titans will offer 800k.....is he worth that?

Rosehill tomorrow R4 No 7 Rebel Rama 18/1 ....Multiple's with Gold Trip and Delexo

        • On, fingers crossed Poppa

        • You told us that Mahoney was no good while I told you he was the best dummy half at the club.  This was well before he made his debut.

Now you are worried about us losing him lol, I've been right more times than I've been wrong in this place.

          • Never said Al, you may have dreamt it, when you were fantasising about me LOL

            • I remember you blamed him for the 2017 U20's GF loss and said you weren't a fan, i know you are getting on just lucky you have me around to remind you of these things.

And as for me fantasising about you???  LOL you wish old boy.

I like Barb Raider and poor old Brooklyn Hustle may get a chance with Willo off and J Mac on.

              • Lol, yes he did lose the2017 u/20 GF and not so much a non fan.....just a very selfish player. By the way I said the same about Steve Ella in 1980 and noted how he changed to anything but when under Gibson and arriving in FG. Many young players fall for this trap and Reed has grown out of it.

Interesting to see how his persona comes through in these negotiations given his persona as a very young player. I respect him for his quality and I do not see that selfishness in his current game. He was impatient to leave the dogs to come to us......it is just going to come back to how ensconced he is with the Parra culture. Do we match 800k, that is quiet a question.....will he become a great or just be a very good player, that's a question we cannot answer, good luck to O'Neill and his cohorts in coming to terms with that decision.

  • I think RGC could be a surprise re-signing also, think he will be pleasently surprised when he wont get 750K elsewhere, so he could stay for less.
    Paulo same.

I agree Matterson is gone and Niukore also, therefore adds value on Lane and Cartwright as the only other known back-rowers in this team other than Papali'i. Big opportunity for Cartwright.

I also think the best battle this year is the back-up prop, Kaufusi, Makatoa and Greig all of contract in 2022 and vying for a bench spot. Maka and Greig would be cheaper options but i think Kaufusi could get a decent offer elsewhere for 2023.
