Realistically 2017 is mostly shot.

It's too late into season to be looking to recruit the top players in key positions such as the spine. To pull off these type of signings require a lot of forward planning. It's a must we we Aquire a quality 9 and 7, unless your lucky enough to get a player who's had a falling out with their club the cream have already sorted their future or fine tuning the paperwork . It's time to sure up the squad we want long term on front ended contracts, buy some cheap young playmakers and hope for the best while forward planning now to recruit the spine we want in the first game of 2018.

  • In previous years I would be concerned but after this year, you just never know what will happen?

Mid season transfers and the like show that if you have the money in the bank, which we do, you are never out of the race for quality signings. I am sure the Titans would agree.

Sure, it's not ideal the position that we are in, but BA seems like a pretty shrewd recruiter and the likes of Beau Scott and Jennings were still under contract so who know's?

  • South and Roosters to name 2 teams are going to be making a fair few changes during the offseason so you can pickup a few players that way...

    • I have to agree up to a point with you Bup, I know a lot of former strong supporters of the game who now rarely if ever go to a game, some still follow at a distance but the sheer enthusiasm has gone. Much of the reason is put down to refeering decisions & their inconsistencies, another big one is for many of them who are older now, they will not attend night games owing to the cold weather.

Some wonder why the Sunday afternoon games are played at 4pm, meaning half of the game is in darkness or semi darkness. What is wrong with the old 300pm kick off, a Saturday afternoon game would not hurt either. Some talk of the fact of next to no loyatly among players & hard to see these days one club players.

For those who have experienced the game over many years & see the changes, there is a lot of disillusionment in the game overall.

  • Thank goodness you are not involved in the clubs recruitment and prepared to write off a season before it has even begun. For starters there is things happening in the background that not many including you and I are not privy to in regards to player recruitment and retention. Next cab off the rank  from what I hear is we actually will and do have a fair bit of coin up our sleeve to jag a good quality player or 2 for 2017. Like earlier this year there are a few deck chairs to be shuffled to see how it all stacks up.

Be patient or take a year off and go and follow the A League.

  • Im not going to say that we will get lucky like the Titans this year re signing. They have been extremely lucky with who has come onto the market. But you do need to have funds/plan ready to go should someone become available.

Filling up the Top 25 with overpaid gap fillers is not the answer, neither is expecting a top line player under contract to magically become available.

You are probably right, now is where you start discussions re interest in signatures for 2018, but you still may have someone drop into your lap.

    • Bup, the guts of your message is true. We have been handicapped by the NRL.

But a few astute signings by Brad, along with the solid culture we have built this year, have me genuinely excited for next year.

I'm very happy with getting Fogarty, I think that is the start of our astute signings.

  • So with Corey Norman & Semi back in the current side you don't think we are a better side then the Raiders & Dogs???

We have beaten the dogs twice, & smashed the raiders & last time I looked at the ladder both those sides were in the top four.

    • Junior Paulo, Keiran foran and Nathan Peats were also in the Eels teams that beat the dogs and Raiders
  • I think we'll win more games then we lose next because of our work ethic, attitude and commitment but in the key areas of game management, kicking game, threat from dummy half and penetration through the middle , we haven't improved list wise for next year. We have no chance of winning the premiership next year based on our current top 25.
Without making rash signings, your only option is to invest in youth, hoping for the best, lock up your core group then be proactive from November in having a premiership spine in place for 2018.
As I said above unless you catch a break with a disgruntled player at another club your option this late in the season are limited.
What I don't want us to do is sign a player to fill a gap for a year on a two year contract. I realise this hasn't happened of late but most players look for security.
I'd hope we recognise the future best halves which I believe Tia Marie- Martin is a member of and we're are looking to secure them long term.
I'd imagine there are recruits possibly in the pipeline, I'm hoping their players we identified we wanted not players we might be able to get.
I'm hoping we get lucky, though I won't be rushing out to put my hard earned on them in 2017.
    • At the end of the day yes we all want to see a premiership, but for now I think I would be quite happy with a long period of success, an if that means a stint in the top eight for a few years before a premiership then I think we could all live with that.
