  • It was an unbelievable time, the Eels couldn't be beat until the Bulldogs found a way by playing a dour defensive game. I'd agree with Ray, but I could be biased.
    • It wasn't the Bulldogs that beat us it was that loser that took over as coach! If Gibson stayed they would have won every year 81-86.
  • Well duh! The only mistake in his comment is the word "club"!!!
  • a magic backline with attacking  footy that was before it's time, scintillating, breathtaking, sublime, a pleasure to watch growing up, other notable backlines that come to mind are the Canberra teams of the late 80 s early 90s and the broncos in the early 90s I miss that style of footy actually.
  • Bit harsh on John Monie aren't you, he did deliver a Premiership in 1986 (and Runner-up in '84) so he can't be too bad.
    • Took the reigns of the best side ever & lost in 84, never even got them there in 85 then scraped home by 2 penalty goals in 86. Note that we flogged the Dogs in the previous game in 86 & then Monie goes & changes the side around!
      • Jack stepped down as coach to give Monie a chance, but I agree with most people, he should of stayed. You may blame Monie, but I think some credit should be given to Steve Mortimer, his ability and passion did deliver two premierships for Canterbury and a series win for NSW.
  • I'd have to say it would, at best only be equal to the Canberra backline of the early 90's. Mullins, Nagas, Meninga, Wiki, Nadruku, Daley, Stuart. You can't beat that. Although they were busted for breaching the cap in '92.
    • canberra can lick the balls of the parra 80's sides. ball boys at best to that legendary side. they even made a doco about the 80's. the 90's are only remembered for the super league war.

  • IT WAS!!! Simple really ...

"Well he was offered a path at least, maybe not in the position he wanted but guarenteed FG week in week out. Penrith there was never certainty of starting straight away.
Not sure who offered more in financials though. "

"Are you talking about Julio Jones? It was sad seeing him decline the way he did. He signed with Tampa, who i support, it was a shame seeing a shell of his former HOF self."

I cannot answer for EA, but if there is a kid to play 6 now the closest bet would be Papali'i or Volkman. In future Twidle or Talataina could be the future.

"Agreed. But that has to begin at an organisational level, not just the football department.
when staff turnover is like a revolving door, it is never a good sign of stability"
