Professional foul

why is it that a player is only sent for 10 minutes for a professional foul only on the first tackle after a line break? When Jennings made the line break off the Avu tackle bust Newcastle gave away two penalties slowing down our attack but no sin bin.A professional foul is a deliberate act of foul play to bring about an advantage for the perpetrator. To me it doesn't matter when it occurs only that it does.

  • I agree. Drove me nuts that the Knights spent most of the game slowing us down with a range of tactics that often attracted penalties but ended up killing off our momentum and prevented numerous try scoring chances. The one time our guys did it, it resulted in a sin bin giving them a one man advantage for 10 mins and 2 tries followed. Just feels like it's ok to professionally foul as long as you're the underdog...
    • Will Smith was standing on the try line and had every right to engage the dummyhalf once the ball carrier played the ball with his foot. He doesn't have to be square on the try line so what's the penalty for let alone the binning.
    • The rule is when the foot of the ball carrier touches the ball the defence can advance whether the dummyhalf touches the ball or not is irrelevant, the ball doesn't have to clear the ruck. When the balls played right on the try line the defence has every right to disrupt the play the ball. Smith was well within his rights to do what he did.
    • There was a subtle confirmation bias from the referee because the Knights:
      1. Had just made a large break
      2. Were about to score with relatively little doubt
      3. Were impacted by Smith reaching and knocking the arm of Matautia

Obviously, these three facts clearly mean that Smith left the line early to intervene (sarcasm implied).

It looked like it SHOULD have been a professional foul except that Matautia got a little flustered in the moment, took an extra second or two and allowed Smith to legitimately contest the play. It was called a penalty because he referee assumed that there was an infraction rather than observing one.
  • The Knights got away with heaps during that game and the refereeing was disgraceful! The Eels could have fought back for a win but the disgraceful refereeing stopped it from ever happening.
  • Coz there's no 5min sin bin. Bring back 5 in the bin for repeat intentional penalties when 10metres out.
  • The ref wasn't great but in my opinion we were simply beaten by a better team on the night. I was surprised so many people were predicting we would flog them, don't get me wrong I was sure we would win, but I was shocked so many were saying it would be a massive win. I mean what were they basing such a prediction on? We had not flogged a team this year. Yes we had been winning but not exactly convincingly (other than the broncos game). Also the Knights had momentum and at the moment sadly they are just a better side than us.
    • Nitram, I am with you the Knights out played us and deserved the win. My point is a professional foul can happen at other times other than the first tackle after a line break. I also didn't think we would smash the Knights, I was really concerned when I heard BA say he was resting French as a precaution. The last time Parra rested a player as a precaution was Hindy in 2005 against the Cowboys in the qualifying semi and we got smashed.
    • Ah the pain of 2005. We were such a different side when Hindmarsh was out in those days. At least this wasn't a finals Game.
  • That's not the point Brett. The point I was attempting to make is it set the tone for the effort that we put in last night.
