Because the unidirectional microphones are sitting a few inches away from the coaches face and the media are a few metres back facing the back of the microphone.
You're right, it wouldn't be too difficult to have an extra mic hanging above the media. Or maybe they don't want the media getting a free plug for their product each time they ask a question?
I can explain this as I'm in the room for a lot of the pressers. Those are directional microphones and they only pick up sound from the direction they're facing. All mics are pointed towards the coach/captain, nothing pointed towards the journos.
I have no idea why they can't set up another mic. It might be a logistical and hardware issue as a second mic requires another channel and receiving unit but I'd imagine Nine and Fox would have the money to do it.
It's not really an NRL issue as they aren't the broadcasters, it's an issue with Nine and Fox.
I'm not sure how much the NRL wants to get involved in the pressers as they'd then end up having to put more staff on. It'd probably be easier for them to tell the broadcasters to use another mic so we can hear the questions.
I can try to write the questions down next time I'm in a presser but no promises as my priority is writing up the article. I've asked in the past if I can record the questions and overlay them onto the presser but was told no as it infringes copyright so it'd get removed from YouTube

Stupid NRL.
I would have thought it was in the 'Nrl's' best interests to hear the questions....and being 'transparent' is the mantra of TG too.
I'm glad it wasn't just me that it annoyed. It does seem like a easy fix.

So I've now submitted via email to the NRL Media unit for clarification. I'll wait and see if I get a reply....
