POSITION VALUES?

I have been thinking lately about how much money it is viable to spend of the salary cap on certain positions. Obviously the best teams have the best players and therefore a large percentage of their cap on their spine ( 1,6,7,9 ). Another thing I have noticed is the increased value and the need for big, strong wingers. I would say that the wingers value has had the biggest increase over the past 5 years. Backrowers have gone from being nothing but workhorses to a major part of a teams attack, therefore they have also increased their value. Then you have your middle forwards, and the Eels lack of them this season has shown us all the results. Then the centres, I might be wrong but I believe the value of centres has dropped. No longer do you need top quality centres to be successful. Sure having centres with pace and size is a bonus, but is it a necessity.

  • Semi would make a winger worth $1mill+ today and he's worth it, so we do what Jack Gibson did, you get your best players and find positions for them to play in the 17. Cap values should and will vary on the player and their best position, e.g, Semi. Position value to be determined by the player and not by the position and sure, it will still be a great challenge to fill a successful squad within the cap.

    •  What I’m saying is this, if every player was available and if you had the job of putting together a new squad within the salary cap, surely the best option would be to spend the least amount of your cap on your centres. I believe that in recent years both wingers and backrowers have become more valuable than centres.

In the case of someone like Semi, in the past most people would say that you couldn’t spend massive money on a winger and for wingers to earn the big dollars they would need to move to the centres or fullback. What I’m saying is that in today’s game wingers are far more valuable and there is no reason why you shouldn’t pay big money to the right winger.

      • Agreed, best players are match winners, players who will find those few minutes in various games where they take the game away from the opposition.  Semi, did that many times.

      • Play fantasy coach.

What is interesting in your concept is how much a players value has gone up or down while he has been at a club.

Once again I will stand by my opinion that it is up to the coaching staff to raise the value of the players.

You cant increase the value of a player simply because the cap has increased.

Simply put, the value of a player is reflected in the position on the ladder that the team finishes.

    • We are about to find out whether signing Farah would have been a wise choice. Our biggest problem is 9, he the guy that steers the ship, he controls the attack & leads the defence. Prichard ok, gives it his all in defence, his attack ok, but that's it, always on the sideline. It's hard to believe the Dogs released cook and Kaufusi. Two great players that were released by Hasler. Lol
We need to find a good Hooker!
