Poppas's Corner: When is a review not a recall!

I was incredably disappointed in that performance last night because it did not need to be so.

We did the hard work and got to that 12 all stage and virtually fcuked it up at that point. Leadership was an issue and it was Moses worst performance I can remember from him. He lost his team by lacking in his role of providing leadership when it was required. The forced passes that were intercepted being a great reminder of the inherent panic, that was within the team. They were scared to win!

I think Ryles made some selection error's but "gee" they are subjectively error's than anyone makes. I would have played Joash over Volks, not because one is a better player than the other, but to compliment Moses game management. There is no point of having two game managers on the field together, if neither of them get it right!.............. You will all note that Moses became  lost because he realised he had someone else to worry about running "his game" or the adjustment to his game, if you put it another way. This goes back a fair way in Moses working with another half. He has never worked with Cleary (also think Norman) and many on here have "overrated" him through their own desperation to have a marquis player. I am positive that Ryles, never understood this and is probably only learning now. but only if he wants to.

At "12 all" and the previous matches, these guys have been playing above themselves, we need to note that the coach has done an amazing job getting such results from a "realistic" reserve grade side. Moses is a "vanilla" half outside of his natural skill levels. I am one of his biggest fans, but it does not matter how good you are if you cannot "muster" the cattle.

It continues to amaze me that we get the "diehards" on here that offer the blame to the HOF and CEO without having a clue of what obstacles have been placed in the way.

My guess is that after the game last night, morale will be extremely low, anyone with the ability to get out will do so at the first opportunity.

Players like JAC, Dyllan Walker will say.....it was an experience and a great bunch of guys, but they are not achieving anything! Other guy's like Russell, Peninsini (both need leadership) and even our promissing young forwards will be have similar questions thrust on them by well meaning mentors and advisors. Why did Lomax leave, surely he could not have been that smart? But who knows, he saw it at St George and got out!

This upcoming recruitment period is paramount, if its is not directed correctly then the team management has to be independantly reviewed, my experience with reviews is they can be very proactive, the downside is the people that order a review are not likely to relate to internal criticism.

I have said in a post with Super during the week, that players need to love their club, that's why loyalty becomes such a big part in successful teams, this spirit (BA had it initially untill losing it after 2019/20), needs to be restablished under Ryles within the start of next season, or we are gone again!

PS Note, I haven't offered any solutions, I just don't know what they are (I have an idea but will hang on to it).....but let me tell the guys that are always the big critic's on here.....no point in rearranging the "deck chairs" at present they are just screaming as they "jump overboard".

  • I think fair claim for Joash. Though I don't think he is a 6, it makes sense to simplify Moses' game.

    • yes, you got that right LB, who knows what the right position for Joash is, but it does simplify Mose's game.

I honestly don't think anyone will touch Moses from hereon unless he has a turnaround and play's every game for the next 12 months. He will be very difficult to onsell and we will be giving up to 500k in his contract if we onsold him......

  • You don't need a review, you just need to recruit someone that knows what they're doing. Someone that knows what a winning club looks like and can put that together. You reckon Gus or Ponisi or Politis ever needed a review? They work out what needs fixing and they fix it. External reviews are good for corporates when you have layers upon layers of management. An NRL club should be a fairly flat management structure with a boss calling the shots

    • Good point AE except that we are not an ordinary club, we have self imposed rules (I listed an example out of the hoops we have to run through).

      • Self imposed rules doesn't stop you from sacking an underperforming GM of football and replacing him with the best available. I've built a 30 million a year business from scratch and I can tell you the secret formula is recruiting the best talent. Jim Sarantinos is losing credibility everyday he keeps MON. He needs to show some stones simple

        • @Angry Eel, Yes again you miss the point, nobody will want to come with those rules.....you built a business, that would imply you did it your way.....you didn't have a public investigation and a list of things you had to do, to be successful.

Your style of management is my style as well, i.e. benevolent dictatorship .....but that does not work under the constitution. I am suggesting we have "hamstrung" ourselves and maybe we don't even realise it!

No board has the type of restrictions we have made.
