Poppa's Corner: Crying Poor?

Why is it as a club we have this huge inferiority complex about the way we are treated?

Perhaps, it is because of the perception that others get sweeter deals - such as the Roosters, Broncos, Souths. And because we don't get that favouritism, we think everyone is against us. The draws. The NRL. The judiciary.

I do accept to some extent that the powers in charge, the Broadcasting and Media (especially if controverial) do not seem to understand that the power base of the NRL is the Western Suburbs and Qld - and seemingly ignore this.

But why do we always cry poor? Is it justified or just a whinge with a dash of victim mentality? Why do we also seem very self deprecating when it comes to treatment?

Is it because there is a history, a precedence, or is because the broadcasters and many of the commentators live/are based in the Eastern Suburbs?

Do you see them trying to appeal more to the socially economic advantaged audience than the working class Western suburbs? Or is that as an ex Sydney sider, now living in Brisbane, I do not see or identify demographic changes in Sydney?

  • I think we usually get a good deal from FTA as we are always good ratings wise for them.

  • I think we do get the rough-end of the stick more oftern than not. It could be that they know western suburbs are more rusted on supporters and we'll stay loyal whatever is dished up to us.  Whereas people in the Eastern Suburbs are more fickle and more easily swayed to follow the 15 man game or the game from down south.

  • We have always had a rough trot at the judiciary ( Paulo as an example ) ,  we also have examples like Falou getting blocked whilst other clubs are able to sign players at will ( the dragons / Gasnier )  it's seems like ever since we punted Fitzy the NRL and higher powers have treated us like a red headed step child. .

You have South's who were able to get away with Inglis being paid by a Rabbitohs board member run Indigenous charity , you had The Broncos whistleblowers being silenced when their rorting  was there for all to see , and you've had channel 9 execs on the Roosters board and hiring roosters players for highly paid ch 9 gigs .

half of our problems are due to having a history of weak as piss administration team , not all due to just being picked on.  Like the school playground the weakest kids become the easy pickings. .

    • All very good points Wiz, the Paulo example at the time incensed me. in recent times Matto's 4 weeks is also an example.

      • Matto had to make a decision 2 days after a grand final flogging when he would of been hating on the world. When he tried to change his mind the NRL said no. This was absolutely disgusting by the nrl and our club should of smashed them in the media for this

        • I dont think that's really an excuse mate, I get what you're saying for the average Joe, but in scale to his salary it's like someone fining you a couple of hundred bucks or sitting out a few games . I'd be keen as mustard to start the season on the paddock to get back into the next chance at winning a comp. Yeah maybe he shoud've had more time to consider his stance , but let's be honest  , wouid you need time to consider losing the equivalent of a parking fine vs not playing a few games in the most important part of the season?  I bet you a player that was a fringe player battling for his spot woudve gladly paid the fine.  He made a choice based on his own entitlement his spot was guaranteed once he had his extended holiday .

it kinda set the tone for our whole year . It was a selfish act from a mercenary type player with no regard for his club or teammates.

    • You beat me to it wiz, I was going to bring up the fitzy situation and the rough deals you mentioned,  I will also throw in the way we were treated for the salary cap breaches in 2016 compared to how manly and the dogs have been treated since for very similar breaches.

      • Just the tip of the ice burg brother , if we really sat and thought about it there are sooo many examples of where we received harsher treatments or less assistance than other clubs. Even when we tried to bolster our squad with Lodge and they whacked that ridiculous value on his contract , and then the Rorters were able to sign him for a pittance a month or so later.

  • It's a simple as this for me: Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Basically as you said above Wiz, nearly all times we've been "hardly done by" it's either just the rub of the green or it's because our club hasn't been savvy enough to take the same advantages as other clubs.

The NRL is there to be used to our advantage. The top clubs play to their strengths and constantly look for ways to take advantage of the game. If we want to be a top club we will need to get better at doing the same - find our strengths, and play to them to get every advantage we can.

Those who whinge that we're hardly done by are trying to suggest that our own success is not within our control...and that's largely not true. We can be a top successful club when we decide that's what we want to be and get better at our strengths than other clubs are at theirs.

    • That's true but doesn't (shouldn't) account for the Match Review Committe and judiciary.  I don't have a lot of faith in the judiciary  its always a bit of a lottery, however we don't seem to come up trumps very oftern compared to other teams.
