  • Corey Norman, Mitch Moses not the problem as Eels forwards fail to fire in opening three rounds

DON’T blame the halves, it’s the forwards who are failing to fire for Parramatta.

That’s the verdict of Eels great Brett Kenny, who said it was frustrating watching the likes of Tim Mannah and Daniel Alvaro struggling to put their rivals on the back foot in the first three rounds.

Halves Corey Norman and Mitchell Moses have copped heat for the Eels’ forgettable start to the season, but Kenny, the greatest No.6 to wear the blue and gold, said they would only shine once the Eels big boppers were able to worry their rivals.

Tim Mannah hasn’t hit his stride yet this season.

Kenny’s premiership halves partner, Peter Sterling, said over the summer when the Eels signed Jarryd Hayne that they should have used the money on a quality front-rower.

According to Fox Sports Stats, starting props Mannah and Alvaro have one offload and tackle-bust between them in the opening three games, while just one forward — Nathan Brown — has averaged more than 100m.

They will try to avoid a fourth loss from as many starts against a pumped-up Wests Tigers pack at ANZ Stadium on Monday.

“They’re just bashing it up — they’re coming from the first and second row of the grandstand to make tackles on them,’’ Kenny told News Corp Australia.

“They need to vary it a bit.

“It gets frustrating watching Tim Mannah and young Alvaro. They look as if they have no intention to pass the ball. I look at young (Alvaro) and think, ‘you won’t see 30 because you’ll be knocked around that much, they’re lining you up and belting you’.

Corey Norman is under pressure after a slow start.

“They can’t be frightened to string some passes together. You need to get the opposition forwards on the back foot.

“(Only) then you’ll see Mitch Moses and Corey play better. Mitch Moses looks frustrated with the way things are going out on the field. He’s trying things, but he looks frustrated with the fact he hasn’t got enough room to do things.’’

The Eels started strongly against Penrith but had little possession as they surrendered a 14-0 lead to lose 24-14. They then defended virtually all afternoon at Brookvale Oval, but Manly revealed afterwards they wanted to target Parramatta’s middle.

Russell Packer and Ben Matulino have added experience to the Tigers pack, as has former Eel Alex Twal.

Kenny was excited about the off-season arrival of Kane Evans, who was known to offload but has been sidelined with injury.

When Moses arrived at the club, some wondered if his running game was too similar to Norman’s, and who would step up to be the dominant half.

Can the Eels bounce back against the Tigers?

Norman said at the time neither needed to be the dominant half, and could play their natural games like Luke Keary and Mitch Pearce at the Roosters.

Kenny said Arthur had it right with Norman the natural No.6, and Moses more than comfortable calling the shots.
  • I’ve been saying this since day 1. 100% it’s our forwards. Not a doubt in my mind.

If the forwards fire we’ll all be talking about how amazing our halves are. But right now JT or Cronk would look pedestrian behind this pack.
