Playing Style

Desired Styles

1.  Mobile, hard-working forward pack combined with a fast-moving defensive line.

Current deficit - fitness, willingness and buy-in.

2. 3x 3 Daisy Cutter formation attacks per set - 9 on, 4 off, kicker out at tackle four.

     Accept the risk of intercept.

Current deficit - skill, fitness and coordination.

  • Roy i see signs of a great poster in you, youve got something special i cant put my finger on yet.

    Keep the blogs coming.

Can you go into this daisy cutter formation attack? sounds interesting.

    • Definitely dig into this a bit more. Roy, are you suggesting we start spreading the ball more?

    • I prefer the daisy chain formation.
  • Three pointed star formation, pass option either side, minimum two, ideally three groups in each raid.

High risk of isolation - budget 16 sets per game.

Each player gets tangible work load, idea is to build a reputation for Raids, not a hidden style, by any means.

    • So the idea would be we raid down an edge, targeting a specific defensive combination and work them over?

  • Most of the thought and energy would go towards maintaining/coordinating the raids, less towards 'targeting'.

If you do the math around energy expended - for instance, metres ran (GPS tracked, not NRL stats), and contact (graded tackle impact), then you need to fatigue opposition with defence to compound the impact of literally 'running' your opposition into the ground.

The pre-requisite - you need to be fitter than your opponent.

The type of formation is less important but at least needs to be expansive or 'wide' and 'angled' to maximise the tackle zones for opponents.

  • eggman: Up there Cazaly?

  • By all reports during the offseason the playing group did a lot of running and seeing that our new conditioning coach is from the AFL this would back that up. The playing group all look leaner than in the past so I would think we have sacrificed power for mobility yet we are playing one out with no-one pushing up, the total opposite way to how we should be playing. We should have multiple runners with short passes and offloads when possible, we should have a lot of dummy half running with our outside backs doing the bulk of this, our fullback should be a support player around the ruck as well as our halves. If we were to play like this I believe we would see the best of French at fullback, he is not suited to the 2nd man, sweeping plays we have been dishing up, we could even have Will Smith at fullback to play this role.

Our season is a pretty easy fix if only the coach has the gumption to change things up.

  • Nice upbeat analysis, HKF.
