So we are 4 week in, i thought it would be good to do a rating of each player in our team, and how they are playing.
I am basing this on how they are playing vs their potential, and by that i mean recent potential (eg. dont rate Cayless based on playing to the potential level he had 5 years ago - but on what current potential is)
I'd be interested to see what others think. Please do not turn this into a Player bashing blog - that is not its intention at all.
1. Hayne 7/10 - is trying too hard at times and still needs work on his positional play at the back
2. Burt 8/10 - hasn't let anyone down in the 2 games he has played thus far. Solid as always
3. Reddy 6/10 - hasn't really done anything wrong - but yet to show the consistency of last year
4. Tahu 4/10 - ability to be our best back, hands & defense let him down. Needs 2-3 more weeks
5. Grothe 8/10 - has been making great metres and has improved defensively. Best back so far
6. Mortimer 5/10 - hasnt played to strengths (support play+kicks), being targeted defensively
7. Robson 5/10 - kicking game has been average, will shortly lose his jumper to KK/Morts
8. Cayless 6/10 - most mtrs of all our forwards. Few handling issues, inconsistent.
9. M Keating 5/10 - slow service from D/Half and not taking the line on enough. Needs to improve
10. Fui 5/10 - hasn't been bad, but is capable of 10x more. Seems to have lost aggression
11. Hindy 4/10 - poorest start to a season. Seems unfit and slow. Needs to lift - still a legend!
12. B Smith 6/10 - is looking more a 2nd rower now. Defensively very strong.
13. Mateo 4/10 - really under form. Unlimited potential but seems disinterested.
14. K Keating 6/10 - has shown promise in limited opportunities. Needs more spark & to start
15. Poore 4/10 - lacking fitness and slow to gel with team. Will come good in next 2-3 weeks
16. Mannah 8/10 - shown aggression in attack and great fitness. Will push for starting jersey
17. Oake 7/10 - has been solid without being great. Will improve with more game time
18. Horo 7/10 - has taken his chances in his 2 games and pushing for regular bench spot
19. Inu 7/10 - outplaying Reddy and Tahu in his 2 games, will keep pressure on for starting spot
TEAM AVERAGE 5/10 - think thats pretty correct, we are playing at about 50% of our potential at present. Fitness is the biggest thing letting us down, we have the talent, we just need the will and the attitude to move forward
Let me know what you think! GO THE EELS!!!!

After 4 rounds he is the leading metres gained player by far and has set up a few tries, but from what I have seen he has been much quieter than the backend of 09.
I have a feeling we haven't seen anywhere near his best.
He also lit it up with a customary passage of play against manly to get us the cash.
Mateo is the most over rated player in the team, yes he can do great things but he does more bad things than good and he wont do the defensive work that a lock should nor will he tough it out and have a hit up when the rest of the forwards are tired. He is unfit he must be the only lock in the comp that cant play 80mins and your blaming one of the keatings for his form?
Sorry i cant work that one out.
Everyone know that even if the forwards aren't going forward, even if we keep dropping the ball and even though it is only Round 4 - EVERYTHING IS MATT KEATING'S FAULT!
He should also be blamed for global warming, Michael Bolton having a revival tour and the for the creation of Scientology!!
:-) :-) :-)
We all know how good he CAN be but at the moment he is not.
Since u are blaming mk for mateo's bad form does that mean your going to give mk credit when mateo is playing good? cause by your reckoning everything is in the hands of mk.
Oh yeah the coach see's something in mk that u dont cause he starts every wk.
Stick that in your pipe... Mr blame mk for everything
Eugene simply asked a question and put his opinion forward and you jump down his throat!
Your opinions are not always right - in fact - I think you are almost always wrong, yet I don't see people telling you to pay more attention when you watch the game, so we can be spared another unfounded criticism of Matt Keating!
I have never been a big fan of Mateo. I think he has the potential to be a solid enough contributor but all the talk about him being a superstar of the game IMO is crazy. He is certainly not worth $400K a season. Every time he gets the ball and hits the line, Im just waiting for the ball to go to ground. The boys do seem to be a little sluggish, and at times could be supporting and runing off him a little more but how many times does he look to give the miracle ball on tackle one or two on our own line?
Happy to keep him at the Eels but not for any more than $200K. The warriors might be offering a shitload more than that but who else have they got? They have plenty of room under the cap and are out to spend up. If he is such a brilliant talent, why did Ozzie and Ando ensure they signed Burty, Morts, Hayne etc before talking to Mateo? He is obviously not the number 1 priority.
And how much weight has he put on this year? Might be the reason why he isnt going around for the full 80 and why he goes missing when the forwards need someone to take a hit up when we are under pressure and struggling. Guru comes in and does more of that than Mateo.
As I said, IMO he is a solid enough player, but no superstar. If he can attract $400K elsewhere, happy travels Feleti....
I understand that people want more from our hooker. It is a crucial position, but people do blame it all on Matty. Without a forward pack that is moving forward he cannot be expected to do his job properly! Especially when the forwards are making even less ground because they are tired from all the defencive work due to silly errors!
You suggest leadership? Last time I checked that was the role of the Captain and the halves.
I just don't get why he cops it - when Morts is not doing much and Robbo is doing not much more than defending solidly.
I also understand that people want Kinga back - but have a think about the Penrith forward pack? Strong. Also, people miss the zip zip that Kinga used to give us - but that was in the last 15 minutes of a half when forwards were getting tired and his speed added spark. To an extent, I think that is what KK is doing at the moment.
