  • Paul Carige scored two tries against Newcastle. One of them was the best try I have ever seen at Parra Stadium. It was a Sunday afternoon game in either 97 or 98, he caught the ball in the left hand corner of the field at the leagues club end and went the length of the field to score in the right hand corner. Best try ever!
    • he wasn't the worst footballer. he only gets remembered for one game but rightfully so.
    • But Mac, even in that game he was solid, until that kick. He was far from our worst that day.
    • I was at that game too and remember that try well. It was a cracking game all round.... And Carige was gaining a reputation as a pretty decent footballer around that time....Probably unfairly to be forever judged on that display in the closing stages of the 98 Prelim

    • Agree guys. Even in that 98 Prelim he had a good game until the last 20 minutes
  • every time carriage come up I like to make the point that he was actually pretty good and had a decent career ahead of him before that infamous game. Apart from that try I also recall a freaky one on one tackle in a crucial  game leading up the semis against the Broncos.

  • Sounds like Carige was a better player than many will give him credit for, even if it's one infamous game in which he's remembered by.

  • Carige was a decent player; B Smith had a habit of improving players so far; shame we did not win a GF for Smithy. That 98 final at SFS was a sad way to bow out; I was there along with many eels.

My brother and I still cannot talk about it; but the final in 99 was as bad with Melbourne.....that is footy. But Carige did well for parra and I agree its v harsh to judge on one thing; a few others had more to do with that loss than him.

  • Ye i was at that infamous game where he lost the plot but up until that point he was having a good game. I'm suprised another club didn't snap him up.
  • We've certainly dominated the knights at pirtek, hayne in particular seems to love playing them there. Burt also had a field day against them. I remember that 40 nil drubbing. Andrew Johns was so devastated by it that he refused to do any post match interviews.

"Semi would have broken the try scoring record if he'd stayed with us. He had 82 tries by the age of 25. And he only got half a season with Mitch. Sivo finished with 104 tries after debuting after 23. Could you imagine how many more tries Semi would…"
