Penalties

I have ask the question before with very little response. I believe half and full time should not stop on a penalty set. I am prepared for the insults but I hope I get some opinions that are constructive.

  • I think half time should stop at 40 minutes regardless as should fulltime. The only possible solution is where they add stoppage times during the 2 halves to be played at the end of each 40 minute period, similar to soccer.
  • Brett, a lot of teams give away penalties on purpose without enough time for the opposition to finish the set. I believe this should not happen if you give a penalty you should have to defend the full set.
  • I disagree. The last play adds an element of excitement to a game, because the ball gets moved around and anything could happen. To stop it smack-bang on the 40 minutes would kill that flare

    • I understand what your saying Baby Eel but then what’s the point of having a game of 80 minutes duration which is split into two 40 minute halves if a team can score a try in the 41st minute because the ball is still in play or they received a penalty 5 seconds before the half ended. There are either rules to the game or no rules at all.
  • Interesting post Brad. I guess what your saying is that the defending team once in front on the scoreboard should feel less willing or more discouraged to give away a penalty. Could be some merit to it however I think more people should be sent from the field if your giving away penalties when the oppositions is within 20 metres of the line. It kills the momentum of the game. One game that comes to mind was Melbourne Broncos.Melbourne get in front and give away penalties whilst under pressure. For me it’s as good as a professional foul. Defending teams too slow getting up off the attacking player when under pressure this year for mine.
    • Last year it was people walking of the mark playing the ball at least the refs are pulling this up
  • I know where your coming from but a better rule would be to stop the clock at every break of play such as ball out, knock on, drop out or after try. Clock not to restart till scrum fed or ball kicked off or restarted.
    Would add more game time
  • Sometimes the game actually stops before the 40 or 80 minute deadline. I know it’s only a guideline but they should attempt to adhere to the guideline as close and as much as possible as what’s the point in having one. Especially if the scores are close.
  • Sounds good to me, I agree. It will stop defending teams from giving away a penalty seconds out from the end of the game no doubt about that. Any penalty given to the attacking team during the penalty set will be another full set of 6 so the penalties have to stop altogether.
