Pauli - What does his future hold?

The release of Pauli Pauli and his contract with the Knights ends what seemed to be a promising career with the Eels. Or does it?Up front I'll admit to seeing so much potential in Pauli and feeling so much disappointment at never seeing it come to fruition. I've also found him to be a genuinely nice bloke to meet and have heard nothing but good things about him outside of footy. So where did it go wrong and where to from here?Losing Pauli was not the ideal outcome for the Eels. They have invested a great deal of time in his development but, as someone said to me, it's like Pauli has never looked in the mirror and appreciated how big and dominant he could be. This is probably the crux of the matter - his physical gifts and potential have never translated into consistent performances. Every time he has threatened to explode as an NRL star, it is never converted into regular appearances with the team.So on to Newcastle he goes. Perhaps the reality of distance between family and friends on a daily basis will awaken his desire to achieve. Perhaps football may not be his great calling.Yet, as Kelepi has discovered, if you really want to return and work hard, the door is not permanently closed at your original home. Maybe young Pauli will make a genuine go of his opportunity at the Knights and kick on with his career. He certainly hasn't left under bad terms.

  • Pauli had a problem that is common to many large individuals.Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.He seems lazy and has no heart. If he had some real mongrel in him I'd love to have him in the team.

  • That's my opinion I put in another blog, in two year he might return bigger and better.

    • Tad, you and i know nothing of the real situation going on. There are many reason why he might be going and only guesses as to what it might cost if he did improve and came back.

How can you say in all seriousness that they are fund without knowing the facts?

There have been a few over the last few years we have let go and I can't think of one who we now regret, can you?

Pauli might bite us in arse but the coach can only go on what's in front of him.
  • Lazy and waste of space! The game is changing and this bloke won't do much!
  • Hope he does progress. As long as it doesn't come back to bite us. Being 'sacked' from your club just might be the motivation he needs. Maybe he was just floating along here confident he would be retained irrespective of his performances.

    • The work that has been put into Pauli has been extensive. He hasn't reached his potential but maybe he never will at Parra. This is not the fault of the coaching, because sometimes it takes a major wake up call to get the best from a player. Often, that can be a change of clubs. I wish him well but no recent releases have caused us any regret.
      • Totally agree, some people need the wake up call and to get out of their comfort zone, pauli needs a new club and good luck to him, he hasnt put in anything close to 100% from all reports, good luck to him at his new club.

  • He has the potential of Tony Williams and the potential to be the next Tony Williams.

  • We have done the hard yards with nurturing young Pauli, and maybe he sees, or has been promised a greater chance to cement a spot at Newcastle.
From memory, it's not like Pauli was playing huge minutes in his games last year and maybe he feels with an improved roster in that dept here, he will slip further down the pecking order.

Must be hard to balance the need to expose a young bulking framed player like him to riggors of NRL and allow him to gain experience and at the same time remembering that we need to field our most capable 17.
There's also not too much point in bringing old heads to nurture the young ins' along in their on field company if we allow too many of our young almost ready potentials go.

In any case, if we are to win all of those promised premierships, maybe we just can't hang onto to them all waiting.

Wish Pauli all the best at his new club

    • Be on point every game and respect who you represent off the field. Or else.
