Wiremu Greig was caught unaware with his All Stars call-up, but he didn’t waste the opportunity

He might have only had a brief stint on the park but it was enough to have Cowboys fans excited about their future front row stocks in Wiremu Greig.

HE might have only had a brief stint on the park but it was enough to have Cowboys fans excited about their future front row stocks in Wiremu Greig.

It was a shock call up to the NRL All Stars for the 21-year-old, joining an exclusive group to play in the annual fixture before making their NRL debut.

Greig was actually out for a couple of quiet drinks with teammate Coen Hess after a long week of training at the Cowboys when Maori coach David Kidwell started calling.

“I think I was two beers deep and then I got the phone call from him (David Kidwell). I just started sculling water as soon as he called me,” Greig laughed.

“I was excited, nervous and proud all in one. It was every emotion in one.

“At first I texted my missus, and then I sort of didn’t want to (let anyone know), because it was only 50-50 that night. But as soon as I found out for sure, I called my dad. He was just proud, proud of me. He went out to the pub and watched it from back home in New Zealand.”

At 192cm and 124kg, Greig outweighs everyone in the Cowboys forward pack and makes wrecking ball forward Jason Taumalolo look like lean cuisine.

But it is what the young forward does with his frame that will excite Cowboys fans, exploding on to the ball for several strong carries for the Maoris and monstering Indigenous halfback Jamal Fogarty on more than one occasion.

Greig will return to the Northern Pride in the Queensland Cup to start the season but said the brief stint with the Maori All Stars had made him hungry for more at the top level.

“I was sort of star struck a bit when I went out there, I got the goose bumps. But as soon as I got that first tackle in, I thought this isn’t too bad. I sort of found my feet,” Greig said.

“I just want to play. I want to keep trying to get game fit again and play consistent footy and then hopefully later (in the season) make my NRL debut.”

"Exactly. We are losing a winger,  not the best prop in the game or a fullback, other clubs are going to be hit harder than us by this r360.
Let's be realistic about this, the only thing lomax gave us last season was good yardage and a high work…"
