During the Arthur era the only time I thought we were a chance was when Foran arrived and we towelled up the raiders in convincing fashion. I thought hello this is it. Alas we all know how that turned out. Otherwise I've never been confident.
I'd be interested to see what this squad could achieve under a different coach. Moving Waqa off the wing and back into the centres has been diabolical - why did he do this? Other clubs have shown this season that major improvements can be made in a short space of time but we seem to be on this long winded journey of discovery where no one really knows where we are headed. I think Brad is out of his depth.
No hope.
2017 our win/loss record flattered us big time. We were rubbish. A top 4 team with a negative For and Against that only became positive in the last couple of weeks of the season. Beat alot of the also rans and the guns during origin. Had a game back end of the year we needed to win to make top 4 and lost to last placed Newcastle who couldnt beat time with a stick. Lucked into the 4 anyway somehow.. . Admitedly we really aimed up in that finals game v Storm and that was our best performance of the season by lengths. Left it all there though because we were horrible the next week against the Cows.
2019. No. For mine was a much better season than 2017 even though we didn't finish as high. It was slowly coming together and probably the peak of BAs coaching with us. Could only win at home and were cannon fodder against the top sides away.
2020. No. The season we were flat track bullies. Started the season after covid on absolute fire and before I can start believing we fizzled out.
2021 . No. Mirrowed 2020. Before we could start getting hopeful people shouldve been wary of 2020. Turned out pretty similar BUT we finished the season very strongly which meant we could use it as a springboard into 2022. Especially defensively. Having minimal turnover and finished the year strongly defensively was a positive sign.
2022. No! Our defensive finish was fools gold. We missed 50 tackles round 1, 50 tackles round 2. Our edge hasn't been fixed - Simonson Penisini edge is getting worse by the week... no hope at top 4. This year had the most potential for us to have a big year and its turning into a flop. We may not even make the 8.
In summary no.. Ive never once felt we had a chance under BA.
We won 11 of our last 13 games in 2017 to come fourth. I don't think we lucked it in there like. But I do remember the game against Newcastle. Danny Levi has his annual game of the year against us.
From memory the Broncos and Storm were the only top 8 teams we played over that whole 13 games and the Storm we played when they were missing all their origin players. Was the most favourable draw of all time. Coming off the seasons before it I can see it was very much an improved season but I didnt ever have hope we were a title shot. We were great against the Storm in that final which had heaps of people predicting us to be top 4 in 2018. We all know what happened there.
The salary cap scandal bailed us out of trouble .
We we're paying blokes at other clubs , blokes at no clubs .. that team in the Ricky Stuart era was so bloody low he wrote half of them on an overhead never to come back . We had to replace those guys whilst paying them.
BA inherited it but he at least got the slate wiped clean during this and could build his team from there. Was a tough 2016 for him and the club but he's been afforded a lot more roster luxury than Kearney , Ricky etc were. 2017 was a decent coaching effort but I never for one second thought we could win the comp that year . Storm were the best team by lengths .
The final v them gave everyone hope for 2018 and BA produced the worst coaching performance of his career (this season is looking like eclipsing it ) He should've been sacked that season .
We stuck by him and he repaid us by getting us back on track in 2019 but this 2022 is turning out to be a coaching disaster . BA had roster continuity no other team had , we'd been building the prior 2 seasons and had a spine that have 50+ games together .. and our attack looks like we've never practiced it and our defence is all over the place . Absolute coaching disasterclass .
I would say about 2018, we were probably the unluckiest wooden spooners of the modern era. I did a video about it on my channel. There were a few games we lost due to the bounce of ball and in one case against Newcastle, French scored on the siren but the bunker showed his foot just touched the sideline. Not to forget Manly were found guilty of salary cap rorting but didn't get any points deduction despite their case being similar to ours.
Gotta make the finals first.
I think we will make finals this year. Easts are six points behind us currently and they are in ninth, we would realistically have to lose all our games and they would have to go on a win streak to overtake us.
The raiders are the bid danger of taking our spot in the 8, they have a relatively easy run home. With our current attitude we will be lucky to win one game in the run home.
Canberra are very up and down though this year. Most of the time when I tip them to win they lose and when I tip against them they win.
