PARRAMATTA EELS RETIREMENT LODGE

In the past NRL players headed overseas to England to play a season or two in the Super League just before they retired. These days there seems to be a new location for these players to go....Parramatta. Some people in rugby league circles are likening us to the Roosters team from a few years back, when O'Meley and Fitzgibbons were still running around for them and they were criticised for retaining and buying older players. However Parramatta are taking it to a new level. With the additions of Carl Webb and Casey Maguire and our pursuit of players like Barrett, Kimmorley and Orford our team is looking more like the a masters team. I'm all for experience but when you read player profiles and see the words...former Test player, former Queensland representative, you start to get a bit worried. We already have retained Hindmarsh, Burt, Grothe and Moi Moi, I have no problems with this but when we import players that have only a year or two to offer at best, what chance do we have of building for the future

  • I share your concerns. A lot of valid points here.
It all comes back to our retention decisions earlier this year getting rid of a number of players who had years left in them!!
  • I think with the total lack of current day RL knowledge on our board and CEO maybe they looked at the Titans and figured - "there's the secret - older more experienced players can do it for us"

And before you jump on me about Price, Rocket, Gerrard and others, think about the average age of the players when they laced on the boots.
  • It's okay to hire experienced players.... but the quality of the experience we've given contracts to is an issue. None of them were world beaters in their prime. Carl Webb had one good origin game and rode off the back of that for a few seasons. Casey McGuire........ ummm...... played for broncos? I don't need to go on. I hope it all pans out well for us.....
  • Mcguire is a very good player. Was always under-rated. You guys will be pleasantly surprised. Did you guys like PJ Marsh? then youll like Mcguire. Maitua is a very good acquisition too, as is Brad Murray,....so whats all the whingeing about dud buys? Webb can be a 20 minute impact player off the bench, so he can do a Moi Moi with barnstorming runs, then be rotated back to the bench.
  • Is that 20 minutes each half or in total?? ...at present I wouldn't back Webb to last 20 mins (flat out) in one stint. I see you don't mention Webb's defence at all - good call.

At least all our NEW buys should have come cheap! I mean no-one else really wanted them.
  • you know shit about the greatest game of all rugby league.

look at what happened with mortimer - you need big game experience.

"Randy,  An interesting one.
I suppose coaches trust certain players or believe they're the best fit for the team, even if club form or a high minute count aren't there.
I'd choose you for x-factor even if you only had 5 minutes of form."

"Hoe, I dislike the idea that a player can be selected for Aust with only 480 club minutes on show...and not all of them good. How can he have form without playing?
Perhaps a rule that said 10 nrl games to be eligible for Aust would help everyone"
