A rival NRL club’s supremo has knocked back an approach from Parramatta to replace outgoing boss Jim Sarantinos – but the Eels haven’t given up hope on convincing him to change his mind.
Penrith supremo Matt Cameron has knocked back an initial approach from Parramatta to replace outgoing chief executive Jim Sarantinos.
It is understood the Eels targeted Cameron to take over from Sarantinos, who has made the decision to resign at the end of the season.
Cameron declined to comment when approached before Penrith’s clash against the Roosters on Thursday night.
This masthead has learnt that at this stage, he is unlikely to switch clubs despite starting his rugby league career at the Eels.
However, it is understood the Eels haven’t given up hope of convincing him to change his mind and are likely to return with another approach for Cameron.
Parramatta Eels chairman Matthew Beach declined to comment on suggestions that the club had approached Cameron or reveal any other candidates for the position when contacted by this masthead on Thursday night.
“The appointment of the club’s CEO is a very important decision for the club, its players, coaches, staff, members and fans,” Beach said.
“We are undertaking a thorough recruitment process. That will no doubt involve people approaching us; and us approaching people we feel are the right fit for our club.
“Out of respect for the process and the potential candidates, we won’t be commenting on who we are; or who we are not proposing to interview.”
Sarantinos will leave his post at the end of the season after a decade at the NRL club.
So they will try again, perhaps once the season has wrapped up and perhaps with more money in the offer.

Cameron is the guy they want they have to go godfather on him and make him an offer he can't refuse.

I'm happy to hear we are aiming high, good work. Looking at last nights game between the Panthers vs Roosters we have a long way to go.
Saying things like "we're undertaking a thorough recruitment process" is, I know, just words to the effect of "no comment".
But far out it still makes me nervous that for some reason we hadn't already basically tied the knot with a new CEO before the current one publicly stepped down.
That's just not done unless it's an organisation in crisis.

I assume that's how it's already gone here too. I'm assuming the new CEO is already basically locked in.
But if not...far out this would be amateur hour.
I have faith in the experience of the Board so I'm assuming this is all just media circus stuff and the already chosen new CEO will be announced once our season concludes (or if they're a sitting CEO once their season concludes).
Matt Cameron would be a good get. Here's hoping. Not sure if he has the stamina to start all over again when he could just retire on top after Penrith though.
Hopefully Cameron likes a challenge and we make him an offer too good to refuse.
I mean we need a CEO with an ego in order to accept. In the sense that, someone like Richo, will see the drought as a challenge and think, what if I got it? I can write my name in history.
Cameron already has with 4x Premierships straight. He can be at Penrith for next 15 years and never be sacked no matter how they go.
At Parra, expectation is on him more. I reckon if you ask most general NRL fans who Penrith CEO is, not many would know. If he comes to Parra his name is in the paper as big get, he is more known. Pressure is on.
So does he want that or to sit in his comfy chair at Penrith in the same role?
Maybe he is ambitious and has an ego to add Parra to his list of successes?
You know what helps people decide what they want to do?, money, offer him considerably more than the panthers.

Well yeah, but sometimes people have the money they need and are happier staying where they are as they know it is less risky.
It basically echos our player recruitment making decisions of letting players go all while not having plan b up n ready to go.
Ive always been on this you'd hope we aren't reacting and we've proactively sought out a replacement and hopefully it gives credence to the Richardson talking to a club.
I'm much like you we should have the new CEO announced within a week of hearing JS is on the way out.
If we haven't got our guy I'm with you it's amateur hour.
