Parra lost because Melbourne were a better team

To people who are blaming certain players for the GF loss, please pull your head in. Mateo did not costs us the game. Infact, if it was not for mateo, we would not have made our comeback. The ref did not cost us the game either. We were outplayed by a brilliant team who were drilled like an army when it came to defending.I'd like to congratulate DA and the Eels for a brilliant year. Please remember we were going for the wooden spoon at one stage this year. We have recruited well for next year, abd with this years experience, we will be better for it.

  • Yep, your spot on the money Fiddy. Unfortuantely, we just weren't in the game in the first half and you can't expect to get dominated for a full half against a team like Melbourne in a grand final and expect to come back.

In the light of the next day, without the emotion we all feeling immediately after the game, I have to say I'm feeling pretty ok with everything. The last three months have been phenomenal!
  • Parra lost because Tony 'The Mullett' Archer makes blatantly incorrect calls at crucial times in a game. None was more evident than his call in the 74th minute when Billy 'I'm still waiting for my testicles to drop' Slater knocked on. That decision cost us any chance of coming back, which we were and at a huge rate of knots.

The better side did NOT win the GF and the best player on the ground did NOT win the Churchill Medal.
  • You are mostly spot on Fiddy but.... If Turner had of been penalised, instead of gaining 10-15m, when the refs calls were held and release, Storm would not have been in our half and scoring a soft try. That decision well and truely allowed Melb to dominate the first half. I would beg anybody to differ that the outcome of the game was not influenced by that call!
  • There is no one player to blame. Congratulations to the Eels you gave me a terrific year and i know 2010 will be even better.
  • Reality is GF's are so hard to make and we had a chance to win one and blew it. People are disappointed. Some of you think its a given that we'll win next season. Yeah well, let's see. There's a lot that will need to go right for us to even make it.

Who knows, the reality is we could be still waiting in 23 years time from now, so yes, it was a great year, but we had a chance to win and we didn't take it. I can understand people's disappointment manifesting in such ways as to blame anybody and anything they can.
  • Good call Fiddy, you can't let in soft tries like that and expect to win. Their 1,6,7,9 had us in big game experience and that showed as well at crucial times particularly on last play options.

Unfortunately we saved one of our worst defensive efforts for the big one.

We'll be up there again next year I hope, but as Bourbon Man says you dont get to a GF often (Storm excepted).
  • I do agree with your sentiments completely Fiddy. :-) One thing that I hope my posts are recognised for, is that I think it is futile to blame a player for a win or a loss. Rugby League is a team effore. We win as a team and we lose as a team.

Last night, I believe we were beaten by the better team. Melbourne are clinical, professional and hard to beat. Some calls did not go our way, but Melbourne converted the opportunities they had and we did not. Simple as that.

However, while I do recognise that we will be better next year, I have to agree with BM on the GF point. Grand Finals are opportunities which MUST Be taken. Next year, Jarryd could have a shocker, we might lose Keating, Robson and Morts and have no attacking players. We don't know what next year will bring and thus, I can understand frustration and disappointment at this time, despite the mighty season our boys have had. :-)
    • I agree with you %100 Mary. Obviously the loss hurts, especially considering where we had to come from to make the GF, but on the night Melbourne were the better team. Blaming individual players/one bad decision doesn't make up for the fact that on the night Melbourne deserved the victory. We should all be proud of the boys that they got as close to Melbourne as they did.

I hope the boys use the pain of this loss to power them through 2010, i think next years competition will be even closer than this years. If the Eels believe that we will coast next season then we may not even compete in the finals, we will have to step up again which we definetely have the ability to do with the incoming players we are receiving. I tell you what its going to be a slowwww off season waiting for next year, I can't wait.
