Our Evolution as a Football Club

Its getting to a stage again where if Wighton goes to Souths you basically have the dominance of individuals who can buy a team and flaunt the cap, Politis owns the process, Crowe is effectively in the same boat, Storm have a multi millionaire sponsor and a whole city to get whatever they need and Brisbane are getting their Mojo back and effectively getting right what was in front of them since Bennett left to go to Souths.

Parra in the city size we are in should be the greatest threat to such a dominance but we have left that to Penrith, basically a mistake of the club management through the dark years of Spagnolo...... the window has opened and closed and I am not really blaming anyone, we overachieved last year with the personal we had and this year the personal situation is worse. Until we can get our management going to that next level, that is about as good as it gets.

I don't think it is a criticism of the current management as much as a wake up call to them that we need to evolve or we will stagnate.

We have to rethink sponsorship, third party deals and making Parra an attractive club to play for.

Next weekend we have the SG Ball Grand FInal and Parra hasn't been there for a while, we were only just beaten in the Flegg or we could have had two GF taking place.

This is a good sign we do not have any absolute standouts to my understanding but this is the type of leverage we need to spring off.

I wonder if they are smart enough to get this type of thinking happening. Evolution is a natural thing, if you dont evolve you dont survive!

  • I agree w everyone that says too many ppl up top see us as their " gravy train " . Not sure these types care about evolution as they are paid regardless and this goes all the way down to the coach who survives for a decade

    • Yes, it has to happen at an executive planning level Carls.....lets not give them excuses.

      • Do even the executive care enough 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

  • Maybe your mate O'Neil could approach Woolworths since he's so respected over there ?  Surely a big moving and shaking ex Exec would be able to arrange a deal with one of the biggest brands on the planet.

Seems like a pretty easy task for someone so well connected to me. Imagine the brands he negotiated with? Well I don't have to imagine , I'm telling you .  Each company pays around a million per week to be in their catalogue and category managers are at their offices weekly , even daily , mapping out promotional slots , larger companies pay tens of millions for multiple slots accross multiple category's , the relationships with suppliers are tight and dialogue is never ending , Mark should know more people with the right chequebooks than anyone in the NRL. And that's a fact. When you think of every company and brand in a Wollies catalogue , all of those sit in Marks old office every week.  So really we should be better connected for partners than Politis or Crowe. That's if O'Neil was respected in the trade by the right people of course.

  • I think we are definitely heading in the wrong direction ATM and a downwards spiral on the ladder, we have invested huge amounts of cap space in 4 or 5 people and the rest of the side is weak this is not easily fixed now so we need some quality juniors more than ever as it seems we can't buy anyone of any quality it seems

    • Bubba, they are not huge amounts in themselves but the contrary is our opponents have large amounts not on their cap because of their abiity to do that......Wiz will tell you how much we have overpaid but the reality is that all our payments are on the cap. If you do not have those marquis players you dont pick up the aspiring ones either.....catch 22.

  • All the clubs, aside from Penrith and I honestly wouldn't have them in that list, are privately owned and have the benefit of heavily connected business people in club leadership.

Penrith haven't been able to retain many talented juniors including Burton, Kikau and Crichton while also losing Leniu and Koroisau. Their success has come from junior pathways which started back in 2012/13.

We could look to become private, but you're rolling the dice. You could end up with a good owner, or you could end up with a Nathan Tinkler who drives the club into the ground.

I think we're also underestimating the damage the salary cap saga did to our standing in the player market and business community. Why would you invest in a club or come to a side that couldn't organise a root in a brothel?

I'd say we're only just now coming through that.

    • We are supposed to have connected business people also, Super. I think the real difference you'll find with privately owned companies is the ability to hide payments and prevent whilstle blowers. When they're privately owned you can remove the risk of the next person voted out sharing information they shouldn't be.  You can also do deals with other companies that are against the rules but who will ever know ?

Easts are not private obviously ( even though everyone seems to think Nick owns the joint ) but Politis can ruin people from ever working again so he can also keep it all in house.

      • I don't disgree with that Wiz, in the case of the Roosters is the strong culture they have taken with them on their evolutionary spiral.

      • Politis has been at the Roosters for 40 years. Nothing is done without his permission. It's his fiefdom and he's incredibly wealthy while also counting Mark Bouris as a board member.
