Our bloody awesome mascot

Paul Kent wrote a nice piece today in the Tele about the Eel emblem. I concur wholeheartedly, I think its one of the most unique mascots in the world and I would have been up in arms if anyone every tried to change it. Full story here: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,26140393-5007146,00.html "He might have sensed it that day in the office - subtlety in this department is not often a priority - but the considered opinion here was that the eel, in itself, is about as uncool an emblem as one can get. It fails heavily on the intimidation factor; no kids wake screaming from nightmares about eels. It has no royalty. Eels don't soar or strut or stride. They basically do . . . nothing. Jack Gibson recognised as much, and tried to have the name changed. A fan of American sport, Gibson believed the slippery eel did not reflect the character of the football it played, and so he attempted to get the eel changed to a ram in deference to the then Los Angeles Rams, who wore the same blue and gold colours. It didn't take, and the Eels remained. Now, the older the name gets, the more I like it. Or maybe it's the older I get. The more the bones creak the less I like fad names like Storm, Roar, Blaze, Titans and others from the Bad Ideas Drawer, held in America but move at the speed of Google. They might make for a flashy logo but they are names that mean nothing to no one. Not so the mighty Eels. A name borne from the area to reflect the area. They are unique to themselves. What other sports team from anywhere else in the world is known as the Eels? The answer is simple. None. Who else would want to be?"
