If we do sign orford, i really hope that kearney can see what pearce & carney have done at the roosters, and maybe we can do even better at the eels.

  • Agree 100%. I noticed that Kearney said last week that he doesn't see Hayne at 6. I really hope he changes his tune because I think the team needs Hayne in the halves.

It is almost a cop out to say no leave him at fullback because that is where he likes to play and has the most freedom. That might actually be right but Hayne is reaching that stage of his career, like all really good players, where he has to play in the position that is best for the team, That is at pivot in my opinion.
  • A "reasonable" to "good" half (Orford / McGuire? ) with Morts at 5/8 and Hayne could find more holes to run into.
Add Mitchell into the mix and who knows.

I am one who thinks with Hayne to 5/8 this would restrict his natural abilities.
  • he plays like a 5/8 and IMO he has the best running and passing game in the NRL, He can also boot the ball as far as any other halve in the comp.

I agree with ME the great players reach a stage in there career were they have to take that next step and stand up for the team. If he can put his mind on the job I have no doubt he has the attributes to become the greatest player in the history. At fullback he will never be that, look at billy slater, brett stewart, Darius Boyd, lauchlan Coote.. they r all great fullbacks but will never be the greatest players in history.. i think every1 ova does it wid billy, he hasnt got the vision n skill of hayne.
  • I have no idea why people keep trying to compare Carney to Hayne.
  • OK lets use lockyer instead.

he was the greatest fullback before switchin to 5/8.
  • NO HAYNE SHOULD STAY AT FULLBACK!!
WE GOT MORTIMER, ROBSON, MCGUIRE , HUMBLE AND MURRAY AND POSSIBLY ORFORD
  • Buzz - Lockyer had MANY years as "the best fullback in the world" behind him before switching to 5/8.
He was older and had a great deal of experience in 1st grade to rely on.
Add to this that "Lockyer is the complete rugby league player and could fill any position on the field" (Wayne Bennett)
and you are comparing onions with mangos.

Hayne (as good as he is) is still learning and should not be punched into a slot just because he shows exceptional ability.
    • Hayne has passed 100 first grade games, has been around 5 years in top grade, played for NSW, Aust & Fiji, and has won a Dally M, i dnt understand wat he is still learning? i think he is being held back and that mite give sum the impression that he is still learning. Hayne has it all, he just needs confidence and time in the middle to develop into all time greatness.
      • Again why the comparison? Through Lockyer's junior days he was always a 6 and only started playing fullback when moved to first grade.
  • Here are my 1-6-7-9 spine options.

If we do not sign Orford or any other number 7 then have:
Humble-Hayne-Murray-McGuire (Mitchell on bench) as we need someone with a kicking game to take control of matches.

Morts has not develpoed his kicking game and what i saw last year from him at times remined me of how i kick a ball at picnics. Murray has a particular strong kicking game and with Hayne as a back up then we would be covered.
Hayne with the ball in his hands more often and taking on the line will damage and make defensive lines vunerable on his inside/outside.
This means that Morts/Robson/Keating maybe playing for Wenty.

If we do snare Orford i think we should deliver Keating & Robson to Bradford to cut his cost as well as eliminate the transfer fee.
This means the spine should read:
Hayne-Morts-Orford-McGuire (Mitchell on bench) as Orford can control the scrumbase and driect thr troops around the park as he has done it for 10+ years. He knows angles, plays and can read the game better than any of our 6,7 & 9.

This will mean that Morts has hopefully put some weight on his frame, developed his kicking and passing game, mainly his short creative options and his ability to throw the long ball.
Having Orford there will ease the pressure on Hayne who could work on his positional play and work on his kick returns as he is the most damaging ball runner in the game.

This means that Humble would be playing for Wenty.
