Ok so this Stadium ordeal is getting ridiculous

So here's the latest in the battle for Stadium money..

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/new-hitech-plan-for-allianz-stadium-has-footy-fans-covered/story-fni0cx12-1226922080457

$250m for a roof on Allianz. Are they goddamn kidding? What will be the outcome of that spend? Sydney FC, Sydney Roosters and Waratahs fans get - to quote the article - "dramatically improved fans’ match-day experience". Heaven forbid they get rain drops in their latte's.

On the flipside, you've got the two biggest sporting teams in Sydney's heartland - the Eels and the Wanderers having to make do in an even older Stadium, that is far more dilapidated and for half of that money can get a major capacity upgrade plus add a bunch of other facilities to the fastest growing area in Australia.

Quite frankly, this is getting ridiculous. You have a situation with our Stadium that is REAL and NOW. You have two massive clubs who have proven they can get sell-out crowds and need more seats, and better facilities and yet we're battling for Stadium funding to support a glass-roof, or against Penrith, who can't even regularly half-fill their current Stadium.

In all honesty, it beggars belief.

The NRL supports the Allianz upgrade. How about coming out and expressing similar support for the upgrade to Pirtek, David Smith. You have a club that you must know has more upside than any other club in the competition and yet this is the club that seems to repeatedly get the raw deal. The salary cap can be flexible for other clubs but we get blocked from signing Folau. You throw your support behind a luxury upgrade to Allianz yet where is the NRL support for a proper upgrade of our Stadium. Really, is there anything more that can possibly be done to give favour to the Roosters?

  • Phil, i will explain it to you.

First off Rugby by its very nature has friends in the right places, ex private school boys have links and are in all the places that matter, just have a look at the funding their schools get, its as bias and unfair as you can get, they look after their own, and generally they seriously look down their noses at RL as if its a game for peasants, theres no doubt who is pulling the strings here, its golden handshakes all round.

Combine that with the power of a bloke like politis, these guys make things happen.

The guys making things happen or handing out the cash dont give a shite about Parra Stadium or Parra, they will only act if they think theres something in it for them.

  • This is the last reported quote from David Smith on the upgrade of Parramatta Stadium made on 11 April 2014;

"NRL chief executive Dave Smith said a world-class rugby league stadium was needed in Western Sydney but said the NRL had not yet “landed on a preferred option”.

Oh dear! I can only hope young Scott is lobbying hard on our behalf.
  • Isn't Alliance owned by the SCG trust while Parra stadium is owned by the NSW government???

Can't believe Smith isn't lobbying the government more for both venues, RL has been getting left behind for years compared to the AFL in relations to new grounds and refurbs.  Look at the money spent for the most unpopular team in Australia in the GWS????   Over 100m, then the money spent on another white elephant the Gold Coast Phuns at Carrara.  It is now a fantastic ground i watched the Foo Fighter's there only time it will ever be full.  Yet we can't get the cash for teams that are actually wanted and given a shit about the local community.  We really to lift our game in this area.

  • Undoubtedly the government want us playing out of ANZ. I feel this is where my kids will be watching the Eels play.

    •  That will be finish to the Parramatta Eels. Kuput, end of time, conclusion, ruination, downfall, termination, stop, and close.                                        IT MUST NOT HAPPEN!!

  • Maybe it is as simple as there is a desire to develop big capacity centralized sporting venues rather than smaller capacity suburban semi-boutique grounds? We should not avoid the elephant in the room when trying to explain the proposal. The real question thus devolves to whether that should be the NRL's model?
  • Penrith just can't be a viable option. Penrith is a fringe town, miles from Sydney. It's fringe rural. It's population is tiny compared to the rest of Sydney and an upgraded stadium would benefit the Panthers only. Not one other team in Sydney would use it.

  • Penrith are running 3rd and can barely crack 10k to a game, why in the hell would you build a new super stadium out in that wasteland????

    • Correct Alan, the Eels have one of the best attendance records
  • I've been banging on about this (the incongruent treatment the Eels get in comparison to for example the Roosters, Broncos and Storm) for some time now.

Glad to see you're on board Phil!
