Yeah mostly agree Chief. Here is the issue moving forward. We have some good kids, but a big influx is not good moving forward. But one positive is we have like Koina for example, he can replace Moretti. He will be cheaper and probably better as an example.
But this is the thing we've done in that getting players that aren't that good to fill the roster, giving them 2 years to at least get them over as they want security.
Mostly agree apart from controversially Williams being medium urgency and Ryley being low urgency rather than expendable.
So our most consistent player all year is medium urgency? He is a leader on the field, if he found his voice he should be our captain
Whilst there aren't many "must haves" on this list, with 2 new teams in the NRL and more expansion to come we have to view this through the lens of "if you let one of these players go, which off-contract player are you replacing them with?".
Trying to do a large rebuild at the same time 2 new clubs are starting in the NRL is pure madness.
Souths are the only club with more off-contract players, and they have a far superior record when it comes to recruitment and retention. So we're now up against the Bears, the Chiefs and Souths to get fresh talent into the club.
The harsh reality is I don't think we have too much choice but to try and lock up a large number of these players:
No one on this list is going to make or break our side if they go. But losing too many of them at once and replacing them with other average talent (which is probably all we'll be able to get from the market) means we go backwards. Swapping average for new average without experience in our systems.
The sad state of play is that we lack the star signing power to buy anyone who isn't average or in a Bottom 4 team so whilst the list above isn't super inspiring, I don't know if we could realistically sign many better.
Only thing I would disagree with Cap is saying we would be in box seat to retain Smith. I reckon he would have at least 2 other clubs offer him regular NRL time. He would take it and we won't stand in his way. We won't fight to keep him. Ryles wants one Hooker and Utility. I prefer that too.
But yeah in regard to mid range players, all clubs have them and we have a few that yeah aren't great but put them in the scenario where they are simple options for injuries and/or suspensions and asked to do a job for a period, they can be great. Kelly, Edwards, Doorey players like them where they are there simply as cover, they can be useful. You need those players that won't break bank, played some NRL and can be plug and play.
I l be how they say Smith will be the clubs first priority, yet he has played once in 16 weeks while missing 0 games in cup. Looks like a priority to me.
Seriously do these journo's even watch these teams they discuss?
